Another one (project) bites the dust

Post by Uncle Skip »

After bitching at my business partner about how to keep his stuff running properly, I broke down and fixed his 8-N this week.
Not so much for him as his newly adopted kids.
Remember, the tractor hasn't moved in over two years. BroncoTom can tell you what the gas smelled like. I can't even describe what the bottom of the tank looked like.
The list of infractions:
He left the ignition key on and it burned up a new Pertronix unit and an external resistor that I didn't find until later. I told him to make sure the ignition was off and the battery disconnected when he put the tractor up. He didn't.
He put cheapo unleaded gas in it last year, even though I told him not to.
He didn't put fuel stabilizer in the cheap gas even though I told him to.
As a result, it ruined a brand new carburetor, fuel filter and fuel tank, resistor, Pertronix and some wiring that had been put in backwards. (I had to tell him I told you so.)
Its all fixed and now I can get back to Slick projects now.
But the very best part of all this is, while he was driving it up on the trailer this afternoon to take to a car show tomorrow, he said the magic words.......
"You were right."
I know I'm an asshole but if you knew Carl, you'd say he deserves it too.
I love it when a plan comes together. 8)
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

Shouldn't your headline say "another project hits the road"?
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

Is that the same tractor that wasn't running at the car show yesterday? Bring that thing over to my house and I can have it running like a top in about 5 minutes, if I can't get it running I will trade him for mine, which looks like you know what but starts everytime. That thing doesn't have enough barrels on it for you to work on it!

Tom, I think you were on to something about the fuel feed. I think the filter bowl is on to tight because it is not getting fuel to the carb again. It can't be clogged because every piece is now brand new. When I get to Paradise today, I'm going to drain the tank and experiment with the filter.

Not sure if you were checking fuel flow above the carb, or out the bottom of carb, but they also have a screen on carb inlet elbow that gets plugged easy. (unless someone already chopped it off!) Other than loosening sediment bowl to get fuel flowing if it ran out, don't think bowl should need to be left loose. Maybe cap not venting if getting air locked? My Dad sold Ford tractors when I was growing up, I logged quite a few hours scratching my noggin while staring at sputtering 8N's! Got one in the shed though, still love em.

If you have all new parts and it isn't running then one of those all new parts is bad, or it's something like I have listed below.

I think, it's like mine you sometimes have to loosen that bowl which I think kind of burbs the tank and it clears the passage of debris and air in the line.

After replacing the tank and the ball cock, did you clean the line and the carb it's self?

One more time.

The blockage is at the fuel bowl, not allowing gas to the carb.

1. New fuel tank.
2. New high test gasoline.
3. New fuel bowl/ screens.
4. New fuel lines, copper and rubber.
5. New carburetor.
When I unscrew the fuel bowl from the bottom of the tank, it seems to flow better. I'm going to drain the tank and screw it out to see if that helps.
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.

Unc just for a laugh knowing that all the parts are new . Have you tried running it with the gas cap off or loose . I am wondering if the cap isnt venting and by loosening the bowl you are relieving the pressure from the gas cap not venting .

Rick
if it aint broke fix it till it is :D

We had an engine that had a gravity flow tank feeding the carb
It had a 'loop' in the steel line from the tank to the carb
If it got air in it ( ran out of fuel ) you would have to fill the tank
Or blow in it to get the gas running.....
