I really hope the OP is a little more open-minded and isn't swayed by the old-school (which is fine in most cases...wiring, not so much). Do yourself a favor and go with wiring that isn't weathered and cracked and still has years and years of flexibility.

It is not necessarily a matter of "originality" as much as the fact that without an existing harness, it will take a considerable amount of effort to identify and obtain all the items needed to work with a new harness, even on something as simple as our old trucks. Among the six model years of our trucks, there were variations in such simple things as the number of turn signal indicators. It is fairly simple, but it does help to have some knowledge of "what went where", which I take to be part of the OP's concerns.
I don't think "better" was stated. It does appear that those of us who are comfortable with wiring issues have little concern about the use of a solid, "experienced" harness. If a company as large as General Motors doesn't "get it right", what makes you believe that a universal harness is going to be of superior quality?
BTW, the current GM "problem" was identified by one Tom McCahill fifty years ago in "Popular Mechanics" magazine. Basically, people were beginning to carry more keys on the vehicle key ring, increasing the potential for early failure due to the pressures on the keyed switch. Even more so today!

My quest to develop a universal solvent is held up by the lack of a storage container.
