What on earth is this?

Post by Oregoon »

Seriously, what is that, do I need it, and if so, where can I get a new one?

I'm referring to the weird little broken carboard thingy in the middle of the photo. It's bolted to my passenger side inner-fender and it's got a third bolt that once lived in the middle. I has a lead from the alternator running off it, and another that runs up into my wiring harness...

I'm stumped!

Uncertain as to what it is called but saw one on Evilbay for an and arm and a leg price. I think these were only used with the accessory dash gauges. Basically, it was a piece of Fords not so great ideas , just my opinion. Something cheap for an insulator. Don't know how to tell you to find it on Evilbay, but it's been on there a couple of times.

Trucks with separate amp meters used them, I have them brand new at work for somewhere around $10-12 dollars, sent one to blackwater forge a couple of years ago, check with him, but I think it worked well. I'll post a p/n here tomorrow, as I'm not sure if I get it from Workhorse or Winnebago.

As mentioned that little thing is the block used to connect the amp gauge into the alternator circuit. I replaced my amp gauge with a voltmeter. I did not think it was a good idea to have all the vehicles power being routed back through the firewall to a gauge without any type of circuit protection. Seemed like a likely accident waiting to happen, especially with almost 50 yr old wiring.

Any idea how to safely bypass it for now? I don't need the gauge at the moment.

And I found an old VDO voltmeter in my attic, so the ampmeter--cool as it is--isn't going to be used.

no need to worry just tape it up good so it cant touch any sheet metal and become a welder.
