I would like to say hi and if I could ask a question of you?
I was looking at a 68-69 bumpside truck when the owner of the truck says he has a 66 F-250 that he would sell me.
Here is what he told me.
It is a 66 F-250 4X4
Has a 352 engine in it
Has the 4 speed in it also
Supposedly has 77,000 original miles on it.
Was running when parked about 2-3 years ago.
Also stated that he got about 15 mpg with it on runs.
He had no idea of what to ask for it and wanted me to look at it closer and shoot him a price.
What would be a reasonable offer and what should I look for on this truck?
PS no pics yet have not gone to look it over, just talked with the fellow and didnt even know he had it.
FORGOT TO ADD: the truck has 3.56 gears in it.
I would really like to hear what you guys have to say about this, I have no idea what to look for or offer for the truck. I was gonna offer 400 max for the bump, would that be a good first offer for this 66?
Once again thanks all.
Steve

welcome abord steve. these guys should be able to help you out. you know to look for rust in all the usual areas. parts are about as plentiful as for the bumps. i'm sure there's more, but someone else will chime in and help you out i'm sure.

Rust is what matters. Engines can be rebuilt.
Look for rust in core support, leading edge of hood, fenders, front pillar down low (were the dirt built up inside, under the the vent).
Moving back, make sure the drip edge is not rusted up on top the cab. Then back down, under the cab, look at the front cab supports and then look at the crossmember midway under the cab. Then look at the rear corner panel of the cab cab, down low, both inside and out (there are drain holes in there, but they often got plugged and once plugged, the whole rear corner of the cab rusted out.
Then, moving to the bed -- the front inside corner of the bed, down low, was a poor design. If its rusted out, no supprise. tailgates are not cheap either, and a correct 66 in good condition can be very hard to find.
That's the run down for the usual rust spots. Someone will post the one's I missed.
66 4x4 -- hmmmm. Is it twin Ibeam? As I recall, 66 may have the newer 4x4 design from 67-up. If that is the case, its more desireable than earlier 4x4 which were straight axel.
I would not let the engine make the decision for me, though certainly a running 352 is nice. But, lets face it, its unlikely that the engine is in too good of shape.
Ist really not much trouble to swap a lot of different engines and trannies into these trucks. What is major trouble in the long run is rust.....

May want to read my rant on truck values. Go here:

The 15mpg estimate sounds a bit inflated, probably closer to 11. A '66 4x4 will definitely be a solid axle, with a leaf spring front end.
Take your camera along when you go look at it.

all 4x4's up to 79 were solid axle.. TTB came out in 80..and they break..All F-250;s are solid axle with leaf springs...witch is great!.. starting in 66, only F100 4x4's had coil springs and radius arms, BUT still a solid axle. a 66 f-250 4x4 is basically the same frame and axles as a 61 with solid axle and leaf springs all the way around.
I would love to have an F-250 4x4..but i want a lot of things, cant have them all. For an F-250 4x4, even a $1000 would be a steal. if you can get it for less, thats even better...it all depends on the body mostly...mechanical things can be fixed easily...rust is a pain. dents are easy, dont let a few dents scare you... I think that just the frame and drivetrain is worth $1000 if its not all torn up. let us know what you decide to do.
