uh yap pretty much. I prolly got $6-7000 sunk in Aggie by now, and she's got AT LEAST $10,000 to go until she's in the shape I want her. It's a lot of cash to sink in an old beater I got for $850, but if I went to the dealership and said I want something in the $17,000 range, they'd laugh and point me at a Kia.

The way I look at it I can prolly make her into ANYTHING I could dream up for under $30,ooo. LOW price for a new truck. Fully loaded pushing $50g. For $50,000, Aggie could be ludicrisly cool. Will she ever receive that kind of cash? I DOUBT IT SINCERELY, but anything's possible. If I manage to get rich as a pilot for Fedex or somewhere that is still doing well, it's possible though.

Any of these old cars/trucks are like that $15 here $20 there, couple tuneups per year, etc.
Go buy a late model Toyota & this is what you will have.
It will likely run 40-50K with nothing but fuel & oil changes, then it will hit the stage your Slick is at with one difference $150 here $500 there, you talk tranny for one, $2500.
Next time you go buy parts hang around til some guy comes in for a $300 part for his jap whatever, then look at the $35 starter motor you just bought.

When did you cross the line on the cost of the slick? Probably when the person handed the title after you bought it . But thats not the point on these old trucks. You have to like them and enjoy them, thats the real payoff. If I had it to do again it I would have probably sold it when that guy wanted to buy mine for parts. But then again I would have got sick over selling it when it went down the road and still be that way today. Mine is done but I just enjoy it.

does not matter slick or anything else, $100 bills are like toilet paper these days. dont even remember seeing any when i was a kid.of course pennies were worth picking up back then. they were even mostly copper, not the coated ones of today.
but as to the slick, whatever i could gain in a few mpg i would surely lose elsewhere, insurance, payments, repairs.
to take that to the next step, i bring home anything slick related i can find for as little as possible. i always buy the best quality replacement items from the parts store when needed. i have a lot of $ tied up in slicks running and not however it is nowhere near the cost of 1 new Ford f250 4x4.

I can answer the original question of this thread with this comment
"when every last usable part has been removed and all that remains is beyond use or not worth restoring".

i can speak from experience with the accident. i got hit by a ford tarus a while back. i was sitting in traffic just coming to a stop and "bam" my head bounced of the back window and steering wheel. i looked back at a bent up car. i thought oh no my truck. i get out to see a slight bend in my rear bumper. hardly noticeable as a matter of fact i usually have to point it out. and then the other car. it broke the bumper cover, grill and both headlights. not to mention the hood and both front fenders were bent all to hell. even push the drivers side fender into the door so when the owner got out she bent it. oh yea i like my chances driving something made of real metal. i bet mine was cheaper to fix too.

Well I guess there will be a longbed 65 for sale cheap unless you go EFI to get the 25 MPG....

Am I missing something here or in life.

Lets see............spend a buck here a fifty there just to keep the Slick up and running OR spend $500-$600 EVERY month just to have a new truck. Not even doing any repairs.

I have never owned a new vehicle and NEVER will.

I look at it this way...........if I spent $500 every month on my Uni.........heck I'd run out of things to buy for it.

I say keep spending! I have $3G in mine and hoping to finish next summer ending at about 12G's and a lot of hours. When it's done it will be completely rebuilt and 99% rust free. I can't imagine buying a new truck for that much and bringing me as much pleasure. th_inconcievable.gif Before I took mine apart when it looked rough I still had people approach me asking about my slick. I can hardly wait for it to be finished. So.....buy a different boat anchor and run up to your autoparts store and buy your slick a Christmast present!

Ditto to all above. I put it like this to many people when they ask why I don't fix up a newer truck:
I can spent $30,000 on a new truck and not be able to find it in a parking lot. I'd have to spend another 10 grand to make it mine. OOOOrrr, I can take that 30K and recreate a truck the way I want it that will as dependable as a new truck and there will not be another one like it. Half the fun of doing this project is the research, the scavenger hunting to find the right part.
besides, you can't bond with your children washing a new truck!

Never crush a classic. Would you kill a chil if it cost you 30 thou a year to treat an illness?

Just kidding.

yes. Yes! YES!!!!!! that is exactly the way I feel about it. These old girls have so much more soul than a new truck. They were created with loving hands, and we re-create them with our own love and make them into something so much more real than a new car.

My Aggie is already quite unique, but she's not done with her metamorposis. It is a long and difficult transformation for the both of us. "We" have fantasies of head-turning awesomeness. That is what this is all about. Slicks are cool. Not everybody realizes it but slicks are Damn cool.

What, digitals are free!!!!.
I'd think anyone who bought a rusty truck for 30 grand is a little nutty to begin with.
I paid $700 for my truck, spent about $500 upgrading it in stock form and drove it for about a year.
I now have less than 5 grand in my truck and all I have left to do is paint/bodywork, interior, and install this AOD.

THats how I justify the expense to the wife. I want a truck. Now I could spend 30k on a new one, or I could spend 30k on my slick. I will have exactly what I want. I will be able to fix it if it breaks. I won't have any god damned computers to worry about. I won't have a 600/month payment. What I will have is a nice truck with soul that will show its tail lights to just about every unsuspecting ricer, mustang, camero etc on a given night. And most importantly, It is something that I can share with my son. My slick was given to me when I turned 14 as a project. It was in my family since 1969. My dad and I spent more time working on her and just hangging out talking about what we want to do with it. I will never sell it. Those memories are priceless to me. I know they are priceless to my dad. I want those memories with my son as well.
Cheers,
Jarrod

Doc, from what I can remember seeing you post you've only spent a few payments of a new car/truck on your slick vs 60 payments. What are you up to with mileage right now? 25 MPG goal is great but if you get to 23 MPG then you got pretty close from a cool old truck that was designed to pull stumps and bails of hay in a time when gas was $.19 a gallon. With out any serious & high dollar modifications, quite an achievement IMHO. Granted you can go buy yourself close to 30 MPG but $40,000 (not including interest) buys 13,333.33 gallons of gasoline @ $3.00 a gallon. That fills you Slick's 19 gallon tank quite a few times.
