She' back home 1965

Just brought a 1965 SWB 240 6cyl stepside back home. I first bought the truck about 25 years ago. I later sold it to my dad, who later sold it to my oldest brother, who sold it back to me Sunday. The best thing about the deal is it was MY WIFES idea to ask him to about buying it!(we dated in this truck) I think she was more excited than I was about getting it.

My brother had quit driving it several years ago when he was deployed to Iraq, he bought a new vehicle when he returned, so it has sat for several years.

Currently it has no battery, I'm sure the carb will need some work, no brakes, very little rust. I still need to check several things (brakes, fuel tank,etc) hopefully I'll have her on the road in a month or so.

I might have a few questions later, so thanks in advance.

Just try not to end up like Dan64, who has a similar story, but a truck that's been apart and in buckets for years.

That's my story too, mine's been apart since around 1993.

It was a few years after I took it apart that I realized to not take ANYTHING apart until you're ready to go all the way!
It was my first vehicle, my wife & I dated in it too...now we're separated, but I've still got the truck!

Posted a pic of the truck in my gallery.
I'm focusing on getting it running which shouldn't be too bad.

My brother had it repainted a few years ago, not sure what he paid but I KNOW it was TOO much. I think they painted over the bird droppings!

I haven't had much time to look it over really close. I did wash it today before the SAINTS kicked the Cowboys! (had to throw that in) After I get it mechanically in line I might try to repaint it myself.

I'm sure I'll be picking some brains on this forum shortly.

Got her running yesterday. Still runnung rough but that is to be expected.

Doesn't look like the fuel tank is too bad inside, the worst corrosion in the tank seemed to be the fuel guage sending unit. I cleaned all the surface rust off it and put it back in. When I first started her the carb was leaking like a sieve, quit leaking after a few minutes when the gaskets got some moisture in them. I have a spare carb so I guess I'll rebuild it.

Drove her around the block, right brakes seem to work real well, look out mailboxes.

Overall test ride was a success (no pushing), but not quite ready for the road.

Yeah, I WAS ready to go all the way when I took mine apart. Honestly, though, it was in such horrible shape, it's no worse off in buckets. I carefully moved every one of those buckets to my new place, and the truck is all still there.

As JC says, life sure can get in your way... but my project hasn't "ended up" in buckets (i.e., it hasn't ended at all). I knew this could easily become a lifelong task, and I certainly haven't been wasting all this time. I have been collecting parts and resources, and am confident that the truck will turn out better now than it would have if I'd tried to finish it five years ago. I'm not in a hurry.

Cool story, congrats! Nice truck! If you plan on driving it alot I would suggest redoing the brakes with a dual master cylinder though, for your safety and your truck.

NICE!! I have a similar story with the fairlane I drove in HS so I know what its like to get a "special one" back.
