I thought about using a an older distributor setup. I have 2 complete wiring harnesses, computers, and wiring harnesses from 88-90 or so big cars. I guess if I did that it would leave me wider open for trans options. Guess I gotta keep pondering.

For What It's Worth
In my opinion OBD II is a typical Government program gone bad. There are too many potential chances for fault codes
for no apparemt reason. Between ping, echo, call & response signaling in a OBD II system there are 4 chances for a fault.
In fact it's so whacky that FoMoCo runs their diagnostic readouts thru' Oasis at Dearborn or wherever so Dealers can tap
into FoMoCo's data base to figure out what to do with driveability issues.
Also there's a pending code thing when less than all 4 OBD II signals pass & other(s) fail but no give a DTC with reason for a failure.
The Pending Code It just floats around in the system RAM until something happens, or it hangs in for 47 starts then self deletes.
I agree 96 & up engine is more sophisticated & advanced, but I know the OBD II Diagnostics hinder best performance from it.
I've been thinking about what would happen if OBD I was retrofitted to a OBD II type engine & a chip was burned for desired
performance parameters for the installation that was built in the conversion to another vehicle. ? ? ?
I have & use an OBD II scanner frequently and without the benefit of the Oasis connection FoMoCo dealers have, I am forced
to do a lot of extra Diag work. For Example a lean burn on bank 1 with an excessive EGR flow can be caused by something as stupid
as a broken clip holding an injector harness plug on an injector in right or #1 bank of a V configured engine.
I also work on, have & run OBD I FoMoCo systems. I find OBD I is less complicated & they have fewer sensors & circuits & codes to deal with.
It is easier to get my Diag's right in an OBD I system than in OBD II. It also allows me to get the vehicle out the door both faster I cheaper for the
owners, and I get way fewer complaints & comebacks with OBD I.
Of course this is just my opinion. It is based on what I've done on & with these 2 systems. Once I learned the OBD I system and located a good code reference source, I've Never had to take an OBD I into a FoMoCo Dealer to have a scan translated. BUT what's worse, I've taken a OBD II systems in, paid the BIG $$$$$ prices & still not resolved issues we were having.
I'm sure people will claim they shoe-horn OBD II run powerplants in retro fit applications all the time and have absolutely no Problems at all ever. I say God Bless them & carry on, but I am not one of them myself.
I've enough grief trying to get OEM Stock OBD II systems to perform & diagnose correctly in the vehicles they came in,
Oh & Yeah,
And Thanks Uncle Sam. . . . .

Forgetting all the OBD stuff for the time being.
I just got a set of later truck engine mounts. I am guessing these don't use the existing frame holes. How would I locate these mounts in the right spot on the frame? Any measurements from the existing FE holes?

Bringing this back into circulation.
Tomorrow I am picking up a donor car with an HO/AOD drivetrain. I got a set of mounts 302 painted and ready to go. I will pull the drivetrain, clean it, pull the harness, computer, etc.
I am wondering about how to do the gas tank. I am tempted to use the in cab tank to get it running, and in the future swap to an underbed tank.
Any web links to other classic truck 5.0 EFI installs?
I will try to document my swap.

You can buy an external elec pump that will do EFI pressure (30 to 50) just remeber to see how it handles the return line and worst case route a return line back to filler neck.dotcentral wrote:Bringing this back into circulation.

5.0L in my crew cab
Hi, i have a 5.0L EFI and AOD trans in my 65 crew cab. i used a modified crown victoria 5.0 harness and a Mustang computer. My 5.0L came out of a low mile (15K) wrecked 2001 explorer. I switched to using a distributor. It has the "p" heads and cast gt40 intake. everything went very easy. i used a 40 gal EFI tank between the rails where the spare tire once went.
I also ran EFI on my 65 mustang fastback with a 289. When i did it i ran the return line into the filler neck. i took the filler neck out welded a bung to it then threaded in a filttng to hook the return line to. worked great.

I just picked up my t-bird thursday night, then was out of town until Monday, so hopefully tonight I will start prepping the t-bird for engine & parts removal.
I wonder If the T-bird tank can be easily used in our trucks? I'll have to measure and see.
