Classic/Antique Insurance

Post by Gritsngumbo »

Now that I have my garage finished, I'm comparing prices/coverage of four Classic/Antique insurers. (All require an enclosed, secured and lockable garage or storage facility).

I'm considering the following companies: Hagerty, Grundy, American Collectors, and J.C. Taylor.

I'm currently paying $96 per month for full coverage on both of my licensed trucks. The quotes average $200 per year and are all within $25 or so. As you can see it is a considerable savings and will leave more $$ for slick parts.

Anyone have experiences or recommendations on which company to choose?

Are there any use restrictions?

I looked into this at one time and remember millage limits and only being able to use it to travel to car based events, etc.

I use Hagerty on my Model "A". They have restrictions but not bad. It must be parked indoors at the primary place of residence but can be left in motel parking lots when on the road. Unlimited mileage but it cannot be your primary vehicle and not driven to work. I have an agreed upon value of $28,000. I think I am paying a little more than I should because I went through my Farmers agent. I carry uninsured/underinsured, medical, collision and comprehensive for $440 a year.
I also added a build and in trailer policy for my 63. They charged $190 per year with an agreed upon value of $18,000 at this point.
I hope this helps.

My Uni has "stated value" antique insurance through State Farm where we have everything else. They take pictures, you state what you want it insured for - costs me about $23.00 a month for full coverage presently set at $4000.00 value - no restrictions they even know it sits outside.

I have used JC Taylor for 6 years. I can't tell you about claims service, as luckily, I haven't had any :D I have stated value coverage on all my vehicles, no deductible, and no mileage restrictions. They must be kept in a locked garage or other building when not in use.
Premiums range from $94 per year to $135 per year.

I have Allstate "special insurance" on my old trucks, 71.40 every 6 months, no restrictions on mileage or where you keep it, although my 62' stays in the garage anyhow. Seems like they are all fairly close in price and I hope none of us needs to see how good our insurance is.

I 100% recommend Hagerty. My old 65 had a stated value of 17K. It was stolen. 45 days later I had a check in my hand for 17K. No BS! I will ABSOLUTELY have them again once the uni is together. less than $300 a year.

I switched from Hagerty to Grundy a few years ago. I'm VERY happy with Grundy. Cost is about the same, but Grundy has no mileage restrictions. They also don't have model year limitations so I could move a couple of other vehicles over to the collector policy.

I never had to file a claim with Hagerty, but I did with Grundy: the slick broke down on the way home the day I bought it. Grundy covered the towing.

One other note on State Farm -
the vehicle must be at least 25 years old - so my Mustang GT didn't qualify for this policy until next year.

I had to deal with a claim with Hagerty last fall and they could not have been nicer. Surprisingly positive experience and soooo different from dealing with "regular" insurance companies. Just got my renewal and the price is the same.
I did learn a lesson though. I insured it for what I could buy a similiar truck for, not for what it will take to rebuild my truck. We all know we have more in these trucks than what the market would bear. The stated value will be increased when I get it back together again.
If you continue to buy imports, where will your children work?

Hi Gary,
Would you mind saying if you have any restrictions on that policy?

Thanks!

Restrictions are the vehicle is to be used for pleasure purposes only. Club meets, car shows, etc. I told them I don't belong to any clubs, or go to car shows, and I when I drive it is occasionally. Basically as long as I don't drive it to work, I'm alright. They asked if I had another truck for hauling and for errands and I said yes, which I do - an '04 Ram 1500. If you want I can give you a phone number for their Antique Vehicle policy underwriter. I also tell them all about the mods I'm doing to it.

Gary,

Sounds like they are what I'm looking for.

Is this the same place? http://www.cwgcollectorcar.com/
If so, it looks like they don't offer any 'collector car' insurance in Michigan...

If the above company site is NOT what you're talking about, then yes, please do send me their phone number.... either here or via PM is fine with me.

My uncle got some sort of antique insurance on his 82 Silverado. Definite restrictions. He took pictures and sent them in so they could write the policy They told him he had to take the toolbox and trailer ball off the truck before they would insure. Had to be stored indoors.
I had State Farm on the wife's truck when it was running. It was like 15 bucks a month. I think that was a liability policy only though. There really weren't any mileage restrictions to speak of. I had antique plates on the truck though, and the state puts restrictions on the use of the vehicle because of that.

Good question --- maybe due to the "no fault" insurance issues here in MI?
Oh well,,,,, thanks anyway, Gary.... :(

I'm having my Allstate agent check into the "special insurance" for my trucks. Thanks for the comments.
