straight six efi
Just wondering if anyone here has put a 4.9 efi in their slick? I know how most of you feel about the six, so don't dog me on it:P I'm back stateside and would like to put together a '65-66 shortbed for my dad. I'm thinking an efi with a relatively modern auto trans is about as easy of a daily driver as it gets. I've scrounged around several ford-six sites looking for any info on slicks, but I figure this is the source... Thanks fellas

Glad you're back home. Sounds like a good project. Don't let anyone rag you about the "6's". All depends on what you want to do with it. Not familiar with that particular engine, but sounds like it should be a good driver and great gas mileage.
I lived in Springfield for a couple of years back in the late 70's/early 80's. Great people there.

Hey Iceman, other than the trouble of actually converting it, what do you prefer about the carb vs the efi? I'm not looking for a hotrod here, just something that dad can truly depend on. Lord knows I love my 66' 250, but i never leave last minute when I'm running it, because there is bound to be something that needs attention on it

I have a 300 in my 65 and really like it. It came from the factory with a 240 and the PO put in a 300. It has a three on the tree. I would like to find an overdrive tranny for it. Before I tore it apart to fix the rust in the cab I would drive it any where.
I won't dog anybody about a six, I like em!
Have Fun!

Thanks Marty,
Good information over there, and lots of encouragement. hehe. Just switched over to the blue myself. Had enough of the bald angry fellows in green. Down here at Sheppard learning how to sit on my butt and look into a microscope. Loving every second of it too.

i wish i would have known you lived in springfield. a few of us bump heads (67-72 ford trucks) met up at lamberts for some throwed rolls and bsdown off 65 last weekend. it was a pretty good time. i'll remember you next time us old ford die hards get together near you.

hehe, where's the love??? lamberts without me? forget the rolls, but i'll take that sorghum all day long! Just as well though, I'm down in texas learning how to be a lab nerd for the air force. won't be back home to springfield until memorial day. You should see all the slicks they have sitting around here in tx, it's ridiculous! i'm taking at least one home with me, but its not like there isn't a million more for the rest of ya

I have always liked the 300's, especially with an overdrive. These motors have impressed several of my bow-tie wearing friends. The power and economy are a great blend. The only problem you may encounter is the wiring for the EFI. Check with a place like the Detail Zone to get a harness.
If you continue to buy imports, where will your children work?
The EFI swap should not be hard, I like the EFI setup in my 63, it came out of an 88 F150. If you are looking at doing this, try to get ahold of a complete truck, and swap all the wiring over to your slick. It sure is nice not having to pump the gas and pull the choke to get it running.
A couple things you will need is a return line and high pressure fuel pump. Use the computer from the doner, the wiring fits nice and then you have upgraded wiring in your slick.
I did my swap over a couple months, but I also had some other things to fix when I had the engine out.
Have fun.
