Slick 60's

Here are a few more pics of the engine with oil pan and oil pump installed, intake and exhaust loosely installed and a couple pulley's on.

More progress.

I have the front axle taken down to the spindles and rear axle is completely striped to the housing. Both with an initial cleanup, taking the majority of the rust off.

I have the axles mocked up with the rear axle flip and front mono springs setups.











In the last pic, I have the rear axle notch I will be using sitting on the frame. Got that from Daryl here in Houston after seeing his setup. It looked really clean.

Also have to weld in the front mount for the 292 (sitting on the front of the frame), so I am hoping to set the engine in place to make sure I get it in straight sometime in the next week or so. Will also need to work on the drive line, so I will need to get the rear axle back together soon.

A little more progress.

Got the engine and trans in, so I can deal with the drive line and weld the front motor mount on.





This coming weekend I plan on getting the rear notched and rear axle back together.

A little more progress has been made.

I spun the frame around to get the rear near the garage opening. Gotta love those car skates from harbor freight.

Making steady progress.

I got the frame notched in the rear, other welds taken care of, cleaned up, primed coated with a brush on undercoating.

The rear axle assembled, primed and coated with the brush on undercoating. Also installed the brakes.

The front axle has had the same treatment as frame and rear axle. I also rebuilt the spindle king pins and spindles.

So now I finally have a rolling chassis. The engine is is, with the driveline at the machine shop for shortening.

Will start working on the cab so I can get in on and get brake lines going and work with the stepside bed. Holes don't match up for some reason. They must be different between the style side and stepside.





Here is the alternator bracket I made.





And this is the next step.

Just an update for my small project.

Metal work does take time, but that's what makes it so rewarding when it is done.

You are right, it is very satisfying seeing something come together and actually turn out decent.

I learned a whole lot about welding thin metal and how to make it look good and be strong.

It took many hours, but when I got back to the parts I started with, it looked like I had just dripped metal on the seams. I also got a lot of grinding practice, that I didn't want or need.

A little more progress.

Got the brake lines ran. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.



Did some Por15 on the inside floor of the cab.



Here is a pic of how I am storing my bed for now.....

It lets me move the truck on the wheel Dolly's pretty easy.

J, looking good. I haven't gotten as far as you but it's got to be a good feeling to have the metal work done on the floors. Great Pictures.

Thanks man. It really is a relief. I remember thinking the same thing when seeing other people with their work done already, then looking at what I still needed to do got me a little overwhelmed. I was sure they were feeling good about the work being done already.

I have seen what you have going on, that would definitely get me a little scared.

Making more progress.

Here is a picture of the cab with a coat of high build primer and the inside of the cab painted, with some insulation laid.

Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of the metal work and bodywork parts, but you can see the gastank hole has been filled and other damaged areas were also fixed.



Insulation on the floor and front is done, still need to do the backhand roof.



The next two are my next cleanup and repair items.

A little more progress. Finished the insulation completely. Man, what a big difference in sound already.



Wiring is done, except for the front clip and rear end, with dash painted and other misc. stuff.

Ok, made a little more progress.

Trying to keep the pics to a minimum, cause I am noticing that I have a lot.

As like most of us here, the defrost duct tubes were hosed, so I remade them with sheet metal.





My inner fenders were hosed, but spent about 10 hours with them to get them back to "decent".

This pic is under the battery tray, had the whole area under the battery tray rusted out. Looks ok from here, but up close it does have imperfections.



Got the carpet in and most of the dash work done, with the before mentioned defrost tubes.



Other inner fender work.



The A/C and more carpet. And yes, needed A/C when this will be a daily (short drive) driver and with two young daughters.



A/C pump and brackets installed with one wire alternator.

Trucks coming along nicely. DO you have a part number on the 1-wire alternator? Nice work on the Alternator brackets. Did you fabricate one for the compressor as well?

Oh man, I wish I could take credit for the brackets, but they came with the A/C kit, specific for the 292. So I basically wasted my time on the original alternator bracket I made.

The alternator is from summit racing, part number is TFF-7068, 100 amp.

I did have to do some modifications to the brackets and alternator to get it all to fit and line up, but I think it will work.
