you can weld up to frame thickness, maybe 1/4" with the 110 welder. i have a lincoln 135, at the time was the biggest 110 you could buy. i really like it, even with its supposed short duty cycle. it all in the prep and the way you weld.

judging by some of the spatter you got, you got too much wire and not enough heat. Did you wire brush everything before you welded it? Clean metal turns out much nicer welds. Not to knock on your welder, but I wouldnt trust 110 on structural steel, well not with gas. You can weld thicker metals with flux core but if the welds arent real hot the flux core welds come out nasty.
I got a hobart 187 for about the same price as a lincoln 135. Also with 220 if you ever decided to do aluminum some machines can be converted to weld aluminum. Just food for thought in case you do decide to upgrade some time.
