The more BS from ARP.

My head bolts were shipped finally, but they arrived somewhere in Williamsburg Va and lost to narnia.

They put in a hold and claim with fed ex but I still don’t have these head bolts after originally ordering them in Early april.

I was able to take a weekend off and come down to my house. I’m sitting around with nothing to do but be mad at all this,

Patrol was rescheduled, I’ll be gone till thanksgiving now,

Head bolts Pat sent got here. I’m off a few days this week and will get in my garage working on the 223.

On the return address of the box, Pat wrote “save the 223”. Perfect!

So mistakes have been made on my part. So many mistakes.

I am gonna take a whole step back here and say this- I was real wrong

my engine is from a 60. The truck is a 63. The book I use for this build is for a 63. They are not the same...

The arp bolts are the ones I used . ARP sent me an overnight package of the order I’d been waiting months for. It arrived on Friday. Pat had sent me a box of bolts from a truck he has in the stash. (pat sent the 223 bolts for a 63- I used the rocker rail bolts he sent though)

The engine with a 7/16-14 head bolt is what I have in my truck. I didn’t realize there was a difference till I got Pats box of bolts and I took them out to start my project. The ones he sent are 1/2”.

Standing confused at wtf just happened, I started reading on the website for Headbolts.com and on forums- that they had different head bolts (I knew the heads were similar but with different valve cover attachment). They have different torque specs. No wonder I stretched the dang bolts in March! I was putting 105 ft pounds to a bolt that should only be torqued to 75.


So, I have the arp bolts in the head, and Pat’s rocker arm bolts, rocker arm oil tube and keepers in the head.


I got two 7/16-14 x 5 inch bolts and cut the heads off. Chopped a flat head slot in the end and used them as guide pins for putting the head on and keeping the gasket alignment straight.






On another note, the original Shipwreck had an accident yesterday. I came home from work and saw he took a header off the shelf. I got this gijoe in 1986. See what had happened was- my 6th birthday in 1986, my parents bought me a Barbie doll. Miko (a Hawaiian Barbie with knee length hair). Well, by this time, we lived in Cleveland Ohio and our neighbor kids were boys and had GIJoe action figures. The boys were maybe a year or two older than me, and my sisters were into Barbie. I found I liked gijoes more. So getting a Barbie doll for my birthday and pouting, I took Miko upstairs, unboxed it, got scissors and chopped off all her hair... came back downstairs and showed my parents that she had joined the Army. Mom worked for Zayres department store and brought home 4 GIJoes for me. Shipwreck was one of those.


Since I’ve had this action figure so long, I decided I will keep it forever in the truck shipwrecked...
I have some two part resin epoxy that I dipped the torso into to harden the action and hold the wrench. I’ve had that wrench as a keychain for like 20 years.
I need a wing nut for my air cleaner... maybe this will work. The torso body has a hole where the oring was, and it fits a 1/4” bolt. So I’ll fill the cavity with some job weld and tap it.

Right now the epoxy resin dip is rock hard in mot places, but soft on the drip on the hat area. I can sand that down later.

Tuesday I was off. We get “stand down” time before underway now. Back in the days I started this career, we got 1 day off per month gone. It’s different now- command discretion- but in this case- more time off!

I spent my day setting valve lash. I made some notes for which valve is in which position so I can easily check which stroke I’m on when I set my distributor. It helped already as I went back through my notes on here and didn’t see where I put locative on my flywheel bolts and I just had to check. So transmission came out, checked flywheel (glad I did) installed flywheel bolts one at a time again with locative this time, installed my clutch, put transmission back in etc. spent all day doing this.







Lots of heavy rain, thunder/lightning today too. It was getting too steamy and actually lightning was danger close so I closed up shop for the day around 5pm.

Took the dry shipwreck and out some JB weld in his body cavity where I will tap for a 1/4-20.

What I’m thinking for air cleaner wing but.

Shipwreck is now going to be a part of Shipwrecked.

so your first order to arp would have been for the wrong headbolts anyway.i went through this with an ls engine.around 03-04 they had different length headbolts.the junkyard told me what year the engine was but they were off and I had to get another set of headbolts.lessons learned.

I just got home from that hellish patrol. I’m glad it’s over, my pups are at home with me and I have a couple days off.

Ill be home till March. I’m going to work this morning to hold a maintenance meeting which commences Monday.

On our patrol, we had a major hydraulic leak off a small boat davit which disables it for two hours when we needed to pick our boat up.

We had a major fuel leak (1000 gallons of diesel in a bilge) and as we were at GE for that, we had a Charlie (electrical) fire on the other side of the bulkhead at the same time and I could see the smoke thru the hydraulic watertight door as it opened between the space I was in with the fuel spill.

We had our dual point davit break as heavy seas spooled our lifting cable into a birdcage. We had to hand crank it in.

We had a major hydraulic leak on our fin stabilizer system which made our ride crappy in heavy seas once we locked the fins center.

While backing out of Hualtuco Mexico, my #2 generator spring a fuel leak and was shooting vaporized fuel up at the exhaust.

We had a refrigerant bottle burst and shoot it’s contents into the JP5 room creating a toxic gas environment we had to set GE for to clear it.
We had a major lube oil leak on our #2 reduction gear. It was pissing oil out at 1/2 gallon a minute.

We had a fuel leak on the #2 main engine.

We had an auxiliary salt water pump give up the ghost and seize while it was running cooling water to the generator. It overheated the generator in 3 minutes and we went dark ship. With no power, our main engines should still run, because of battery backup. Well, when the pump blew, we found out our battery backup doesn’t work and the ship goes dead in the water!

We had another pump motor ground out. (Actually 3 in total grounded)

Our helicopter hangar got stuck. The support wheels were so worn down the hangar is dragging on the metal track and it just couldn’t support the weight.

Our small boats both had battery charging troubles.

Then one day, we couldn’t transfer fuel from a storage tank to the service tanks (where engines pull suction from). We spent the whole day trying to get fuel moved.... finally I got sick of people not taking my suggestion to open the deck vent caps. When I went up with wrenches, I pulled the top of the vent off, vacuumed a ton of rust out of the vent pipe...... miraculously we got suction from that tank.... so then they did the rest of the tank vents and we were able to fuel.

We had a portable water valve leak by into our oily water purifier system and dump about 1000 gallons over a week and no one noticed because they didn’t sound the oily waste tank....


It Was good on the drug interception side though.

We caught 4,000 kg of Cocaine on our way to panama in the first two weeks. We circled the vessel(which was bigger than us, viewed by 7 and actively sinking) we got the drugs and thugs off and it sank.

We got a go fast vessel with another 1000kg, of cocaine and 3 thugs. We shot that with a 50 cal, threw a flare in it and watched it burn and sink.

Then we caught a low profile vessel (like a semi submerge vessel) and got 2500kg cocaine from it and three thugs. We shot that boat and sank it.

We handed the drugs and thugs off to a couple larger CG vessels and we came home. The other CG vessels get the news photo. They don’t want the geriatric fleet seen on the news.

I’m tired. I’m burned out.

Okay- I am slacking!!! I hit 7 years of ownership of Shipwrecked just the other day and I am so amazed at the distance we have come. I have the last mile to go, but we will!!!


On another note- I am going to look at a 1952 M38 Jeep on Saturday in PA. I suspect it was used at Fort Indiantown Gap PA for many years. If I get it, I will fix it up too. But- that is another thread I can do- or just keep going on here. Your call...... It would be Project Salty. Price is reasonable. It has a legit title and registration which is the hard part. I had been looking at a Cj2A jeep out in Tennessee, but the country boy was trying to float the title... Which is illegal. And he wants too much money for it. I discussed with him at length and eventually turned it down. He has a title, but cant confirm it goes to the jeep frame in which he claims. So- nope... I passed.

This is the roached M38 I am looking at Saturday. For the price I would have paid for the CJ2A, I could get this one, and an entire tub brand new and a bunch of other stuff. So- we shall see.

The M38 is actually the rarest of the flatfender jeeps. A lot of things that are different from the civilian CJ3A or the earlier CJ2A and MB/GPW. If you are not concerned with restoration you can interchange a lot of the stuff.

I took the dash panel apart back in summer for something... no idea what.

Wired it back together, and see that my rear emergency flashers don’t work, And I had disconnected the rear white lights I installed, but don’t know why I disconnected them.

The radio works, the lights, gauges, tach all work.

Horn doesn’t.



Need to figure that out. I’m about ready to start the truck. I guess I’m scared to because of all the hassle I’ve had this year with it.

Tried starting the truck the other night. No luck,
Had work and duty between then and now. I have a small coolant leak coming from somewhere because it is forming a tiny puddle on the floor. I think the head. Ugh.
I don’t know if this is ever gonna get done.

Struggling to get spark. Haven’t had too much time to work on the truck as I have been doing a kitchen update in the house.

Went ahead and got a PerTronix set up ordered to eliminate the points. I hope I got the right stuff.
