New Contest with Fantublous Prizes.

Yes, that is correct! Here are the contest rules.
A small scenario will be listed with signs and symptoms and minimal illustrations. The wining diagnostician will receive a wonderful prize package delivered directly to their home or business courtesy of the USPS.

Scenario:
The vehicle starts up and idles without incident. The vehicle can be driven beyond 80 mph providing the acceleration rate is gradual and smooth.
When attempting to squeal tires upon acceleration or really hit it when running, the vehicle stutters and hiccups in the form of backfire
.

Specifications:
1. Stock replacement 22.5 gallon fuel tank.
2. Stock replacement sending unit, rings and float
3, 3/8" Goodyear fuel line from tanks to switch.
4. Hard line from switch to engine compartment.
5. 3/8" Goodyear fuel line to pump.
6. Holley mechanical pump.
7. 6an fitting to braided hose to filter.
8. Earls filter.
9. 6an braised hose and fitting to dual feed carb.
8. Holley 670 cfm carburetor.
9. 14 in KnN filter and air cleaner assembly with stubstack.
10. Holley and Summit mix and match linkage springs and brackets for carb.
11. Weiand Stealth manifold.
12. Proform HEI distributor/coil.
13. 9 mm Ford Racing wires.
14. Autolite Platinum plugs gapped at 0.045
15. Mr gasket 160 degree thermostat.
16. Transdept (piece o crap) 90 degree water neck. (I had to re-tap threads because of poor chrome quality control.)
17. Fram oil filter.
18. Castrol synthetic oil. (I plan on changing immediately due to water neck issues when dealing with distributor. (Side note: I would not use an HEI distributor again.)
19. Two Optima Red top batteries.

Miscellaneous:
I need to replace stock valve covers. They are bent and seal poorly due to what I speculate to be over tightening bends.
Timing is slightly advanced < 10 degrees.

didn't the earlier holleys have a problem with the power valve "blowing out"? what ever that means. i should really try and learn about some of this stuff.

I'm not knowing this answer. The carb is new and supposed to be good to go out of the box.

that was my first thought too...

It is possible that, even though new, the carb can be defective.

Watch the video and you will see the problem.
What is that holding the breather down?

Good, quick diagnosis! You must have spent last night in a Holiday Inn Express!

That is so funny. I was wondering how long it would take.
I have a good friend who owns a bunch of old Cameros. The truck spent the night at his house the other night and was obviously taken advantage of.

I was wondering this too. I may have gone too far ripping out the smog stuff.

Ez keep trying. Everybody else stop reading now-- I am secretly pulling for you. I have your av in a tee shirt which will be part of your prize package.
Okay, the rest of you can read again.

even with that type of distributor shouldn't the vacuum advance be toward the front of the engine? is it 180* out of time? just a guess...

what do the spark plugs look like? (condition of the business end- crusty, normal, fouled etc.) sounds like you may have a 7 or even 6 cylinder.

the 300 6 i have would run like you say with 5 good plugs, worse on 4 and dang near died at 3. idled all day long nicely and as long as you worked the gas with a feather would drive.
i kept chasing the carb and timing to no satisfaction, semed to be getting worse (it was)
turns out wrong plugs were in and 3 were in bad shape,i replaced with proper length autolite and its like a new engine now.

They are all brand new autolite platinum plugs. All cylinders are betwen 120 and 130 psi compression. I wonder if I screwed up on the wires somehow. I am new at this.
I'm only in module 2 of 12 in mechanic school so it could be one of those situations where I only know enough to be dangerous.

I tried it there with about the same results. Because the cap on the HEI is so big it has more adjustment room the way it is now. With it in back it hits the air cleaner and wont rotate much. I am hoping I don't have to get a riser for the carb to allow it to clear and then have to redo all that linkage. That took almost a week to figure out.

The Spark Plug Wires are ( SHORTING / and or ARCING ) from the distributor to the

....( K&N ) Air filter ! They Really Look Like they are touching each other .

The first problem is that the bow tie is chocking it, replace it with a blue oval and it will run much better.

If my first guess wasn't right. My second guess is, Mechanical Holly fuel pumps put out
more pressure than Holly carbs require. I did not read in your description that you had a fuel regulator. I think it needs one.

Sounds like it is running lean.
#1 Check float level
#2 Check and adjust if necessary the accelrater pump.
#3 Check and adjust if necessary the fuel pressure.
After market manifolds have a tendency to lean a carb out because of presenting a stronger signal to the carb. Check your exhaust pipe and if it is clean it might be running lean if it is black and sooty looking it is running rich.
10 degree advance is about right but check total advance, should be no more than 38 degrees. The hei distributer you are using is adjustable. Also make sure the vaccume advance hose is connected to the carb correctly. Most new holleys perform pretty good out of the box but it does'nt hurt to open them up and check them, not unheard of to find something amiss. All new holley carbs come with the anti back fire kit in them so the power valve should be OK.
