Taillights on my '66CS have 2 bulbs. Top one is double filament and is handling all the chores -- tail lamps, parking lights, brakes, turn, emerg flasher. Bottom one is single filament and isn't connected to anything. Wiring harness has only two leads going to rear -- just like the wiring diagram shows.
Anybody venture an explanation?
2 bulb taillights - original?

Sounds like you have 67-72 taillights with 64-66 lenses. The lower single filament bulb would be for the backup lights.

Later models had back up lights incorporated in the tail lights with a clear square lense inset in the standard red lense. As the galvanized tail light bulb holder tends to rust and become less reflective at some point in time they may have been swapped out for later models with the 2 bulb feature. My '69 Bronco had factory back up lights installed and I intend to incorporate that into my '65 trucks eventually. Nice clean conversion with no drilling required, just another set of leads to a reverse selector actuated switch, usually on the transmission.
