name this part?

Post by sgettin »

63 f250 4x4 stepside.

things are coming along good on my drivetrain but need to get a part for rear axle. my mechanic said no big deal he can make it work the way it is but i'd rather have new part.

sorry this will sound like a word game but here is what i need:
on each outer end of rear axle. holds i believe the hub on?. looks alot like a spindle lock washer i see on the 4x4 quad website except mine has fewer outside tabs. the outside tabs are to be bent forward to lock the thing in place. mine is supposed to also have an interior tab to hold the hub in place on the axle but the tabs busted off.

i'd like to buy a new one if someone can give me the correct number or name so i know what to ask for and maybe a supplier. i guess we assumed the local parts store doesn't carry it but if someone has the proper teminology i'll give the store a call. thanks.

side note. got some good news, my speedo says 35000mi so i was wondering 35000 or 135000. my mechanic, after taking my drivetrain apart is guessing 35000 original miles. everything except the brakes look new and the points of wear he looked at are consistent with a low milage vehicle. one odd thing the axle oil is black as heII. mechanic says he thinks older john deere tractors(he's more of a heavy machinery mechanic than an auto mechanic) used black oil from the factory but he hasn't seen it in years.

thanks for any help.

looks alot like that only the outside tabs are angled on one end and 90deg(as shown in the pic) on the other. looks like i pbly have the same thing you've shown only slightly different design due to being original equipement.

lock washer.
i bought them at the auto parts store.

take one with you. there are a few different sizes.

nut goes on, then ring, then 2nd nut, tabs are bent both ways over the flats on the nuts to lock them in place once at the proper torque.

i have reused them before but its not wise to rebend the tabs in the opposite direction and would not reccomend it either as they are inexpensive.

That goes between the adjustment nut and lock nut for the rear wheel bearings. I had a the same problem finding some when I rebuilt my dana 60 in my 64. I just used the later ones (79 F250) and made sure I bent the tabs in such a way that it pulled down and helped the tab stay locked in groove in the spindle. If I remember right I bent half of the fingers against the adjuster nut and the other half against the lock nut in an alternating pattern.

Hope this helps. :D

I used to cut those in several different sizes on the company laser back from late 99 until 03. We sold them in quantity to several customers one of which was Airbus. The company had manufactored these type washers for years using simple blanking and piercing dies. When we changed over to laser cutting them their engineers had to come in and inspect the process. One of them while examing the laser cut part noticed the slight coloration of the steel at this cut edge, told me and the managment staff that it was a problem. When I asked why he proceeded to tell me that the part would develop stress cracks at the corners if the tech. who installed the lockrings had to remove them to make a correction and could possibly break off when flattened out for reuse. When I asked why a 1 time use item would ever be considered he had no answer! I don't plan to ever fly again but if I do it wont be on an Airbus.

You just don't know, I worked at that plant from 94 to 05. Short run metal and fiber stampings. I can't say it wasn't interesting there "Dilbert" moments several times a day.

94 to 05, thats alot of years.

i work around engineers every day and have alot of respect for most of them. but they do seem rather clueless in some areas. personnel management is uh, usuallly not their strong point.

I have worked around quite a few, have respect for most. From my observations, personnel management or for some even person to person interaction was a secondary skill set.
