Got my wife a Jeep

Post by Phil »

Probably messed up but I'm feeling better about the thing now

81000 miles

Bought it in Canton MI

On the way home the CEL came on and it died.
Called the guy told him where I was and he said it was a great truck and there was an AZ near. Said run the codes.
Drove around with it dying at every light.
Called my buddy, a master mech for Jeep
He said it the CEL was steady it was likely a sensor. If blinking it was a gonner. Said he'd help me fix it and probably had the parts in his stash

We were closer to home so I went to Toledo

Sat AM I ran the code and found the issue was the TPS. I looked and the part was brand new. I think/thought I got burned

My buddy stopped over and said the truck was too rough for $81K miles and noticed a repainted spot.
I still can't see it but the orange peel is different on that side.

It looks straight under the truck though

I swapped out the TPS and no deal. Then I was really bummed
Hit the JY today and grabed a throttlebody
Swapped it in
Runs good now, Idle is OK, a little off like every Ford I've owned. Dips in the RPMS sometimes. A little rocker tap but otherwise pretty decent
It has some issues, the roof is a mess and the interior was swapped out for some reason
I can't even tell you about the sunroof.

I like those wheels. The Classic has a tad more luxury than the Sport I have. Black looks killer on the Classic - the one I almost bought was just like yours.
The idle will vary on mine once in awhile too in traffic. Sometimes will adjust itself after I have been at a dead stop for a second when I have been on the interstate and make the first stop. It's seems like the idle air control runs a little behind - no codes. I noticed it in 2 others I drove too - must be a Jeep thing. I really don't even notice it anymore.
You will find it to be a little "unrefined" compared to most stuff the same age range - no anti lock brakes etc. I personally appreciate it's simplicity though - gives it character. This just means less stuff to break.
They seem to have a personalty like the old stuff we love so much. Takes a touch of getting used to but after you do you'll love the thing. The more I drive mine the more I like it. Just plain fun to drive. It's almost like a club sometimes having one, you find other people with one giving you a nod, smile or wave driving it around.
When I first got it even though I did like it I kind of wished I could have found another 1st gen Explorer. I loved my 92 Explorer but I have learned to like the XJ at least as well - no - even more.
$5100 10ish year old used car even with low miles - gotta expect to do a little to it.
Looks like a good buy - I paid $8313.00 for mine.
Have you seen the Specter Air Filters (like a K&N)? They don't have them for everything but they make them for XJs - I put one in mine today.
I joined this forum too - these guy know EVERYTHING about these.
BTW, you can do a 2" lift on one for under $200.

The 4.0 is going to have a little bit of rocker tap. Its normal with every 4.0 I have ever owned. I have a 95 grand cherokee with 235k miles on the 4.0. Just rebuilt it at 220k Will run forever if you take care of them. They are simple to work on. They like to eat motor mounts and the oil filter adapter tends to leak over time. Both are easy fixes. I have lots of experience with these jeeps. Remember, Jeep stands for Just Empty Every Pocket.

Nope. The PO shopped the Walmart trailerpark hooker accessory/speedparts aisle. Had 781326128736 air fresheners in it too. Smells like a Shinto shrine.

Though my wife added black/grey zebra striped covers so its back to whitetrash status. Ill toss the dog in there later to make it our own.

Isn't the 4.0 six a descendent of the old rambler six? Tough as nails motor with just a little bit of care will last forever.

My Jeep buddy (dealer mechanic) said I got took by at least 1000.
Said I should see if she'd help me out and help pay for the repairs
I keep finding.

I gave it a shot. Hung up on me and won't take any calls.
I was 100% cool about it too.

Today I went to do the title. She filled it out wrong.
They want me to have her fill out a form to get it done

She won't take any calls and she is an hour away.

Pissed.

Phil,

It sounds to me like you might need to contact the local authorities where you bough the Jeep, not on the condition of the vehicle but on the issue with the title!

Best of luck to you I hope things work out.

Phil, sorry to hear your having problems with a newly purchased used vehicle. I have been in that same boat before, and I felt really bad about it for a couple weeks.

I bought a used GMC Jimmy almost 10 years ago. But after some time fixing the issues and spending more money, I got it running right and had no real problems with it for over 50k. It was the best used car I ever bought, we took it everywhere instead of using our newer car. Only reason I sold it was it was 10 years old by then, was originally from PA, and was starting to rust. I probably should have kept it and had a good shop fix the body right. I still miss that car. I hope this XJ will turn out the same way for you and become a good, reliable vehicle for you.

I would think she would be somehow legally required to take care of the title problem. You paid for the vehicle after all.
I met this guy yesterday he is out of Omaha - he specializes in XJ parts and his prices are VERY good.
Door Shell most places $225 - his price $60 (he even has one the right color)
Left Front Fender - $235 - his $110
Hatch $535 - $625 - his - $250
I left him a deposit on the pieces I need.
He sells mostly off of Ebay.
Seems like a pretty decent guy.

Truck has a bad growl in the front end. It only changes with vehicle speed, not RPMs. seems like left side. Not subtle at all.

I am so far guessing wheel bearing hub assembly replacement =$75 at Azone

Ever done one Greg?

Title is still not in my name.
Pretty sure setting it on fire, running it into their house
and unloading an AR15 on em is the best answer.
I'm open to other suggestions though.*

*must include AR 15s and fire

is this an individual or a dealer? have you tried calling from a different phone?
if she hangs up on you again, i would call from a different phone and the first words out of my mouth would be something along the lines of "sheriff" or "police dep't" and see if that doesn't get her attention.
i think even a private seller has an obligation to the purchaser to reveal any known problems, but i'm not a lawyer so i don't really know.
i hope you get this all worked out though.

I haven't done one on a Jeep. If they are the similar to other 4x4s I have had you may only need to repack it. A 4x4 bearing gets really obnoxious noise wise when they need a little attention.
Let me know if your F150 has auto locking hubs BTW - I have run the so called by most POS's for 2-300K with No problems. I'll fill you in if you need me too.
I would just call the sheriff in her county. Tell them she messed up the title and won't take your calls. I would inform them that the clock is ticking to get it plated and your wife needs the thing to get to Dr's appointments. They should be able to help you out pretty quick. I wouldn't consider that playing them - it's just the truth.

You might try the Jeep guy I posted up above (George). His phone # is on his listings. I was in his shop - he has axles out. He has at least 2 warehouses of parts. I don't know if he sells them as an assembly but it wouldn't hurt to ask. Tell him you got his info from the guy who left a deposit on the fender, door, & hatch the other day.
