Something new every day
You learn and see something new every freaking day, and today was no exception.
I never knew this existed.
So along those notes, this might be a neat spare tire idea for someone building a truck.
The pictures should tell you everything you need to know, and yes Loretta, it was a stock Ford option.

The spare tire location.

And inside the bed......

that bed is on a F-350 With the longer wheelbase and fits only the trucks with longer wheelbase and if you look closely the whole inside of the bed is totally different than any of the other 73/79 beds..., bed is unique in its own right

Yeah Max.
But you're originally from New York.
If you'd stayed up there you'd be driving an automatic V-6 Firebird with T-tops, gold chains around your skinny neck, and probably a mullet..... well, maybe not a mullet with your hair.

if you look closely at the brown truck with the cab over camper in the back you can see that panel in this brochure.

I remember when those came out. We has just bought a 72 Camper Special otherwise we would have bought one. The rear axle set farther back giving you better weight distribution with a 10 1/2 foot slide in camper or for trailer towing. They were very nice rigs. They handled really great, or at lest that is what I was told.

I have seen one or two of them before. I am guessing y'all Texans saw the truck with its spare tire box, but didn't know it was there.
My dads 77 F250 he bought new has the original tool box in that location. With the original busted lock on it from when someone stole everything out of it.

I agree, they are pretty cool trucks!
Information I've gathered on them:
-- There were no F-250 Super Camper Specials (S/CS).
-- F-350s badged as Super Camper Specials were only built from 1973-1976, were 2wd, regular cab, and had a 140" wheelbase. Not all of the 140"wheelbase F350's are Super Camper Specials, only adding the Camper Special package to the 140" wheelbase F350 Styleside is what made it an S/CS.
-- There were some 140" wheelbase, 73-'79 F350s that were badged as, Trailer Special (TS), but instead of a spare tire, the same RH quarter panel cut out area was used as a storage compartment. The shorter F350 (133") wheelbase and F-150 & F250 TS trucks did not have the large storage compartment in the quarter panel.
-- Most S/CS were equipped with 460 V8 and C6 automatics, had a GVWR of 10,000lbs and were equipped with a Single Rear Wheel (SRW) using a 10" wide, 10-ply tire.
-- These same trucks were also made in '77-79, but the SUPER was dropped from the emblems, although it was still referred to as S/CS in some parts catalogs.
Here is an ad for a S/CS that lists the features: http://cgi.ebay.com/1974-Ford-Super-Cam ... 0108874905
