Slick Trivia

Post by Michelle »

Your Slick trivia question for the day. Where do you think the defroster duct registers are painted? Are they painted in bulk some place and delivered to the assembly line? Are then painted on the truck? Are they painted the same time the cab is painted? There are other possibilities as well. tell me where or when you think they are painted. Give it your best shot and I will post the answer here tomorrow night.

I'm with Pat. Same time as the cab was painted. Somehow.

Nah. I think they're pre-painted in mass as are the little window corner trim pieces.
If they were painted on the truck, the screws would be the same color as the interior like the window and latch screws in the door.

I know that mine was painted all over and that would have been difficult if they were installed first. So, I am going with Unc and saying that they were mass painted and installed at a later date, probably at the same time of the heater hose install.... :hm:

Not painted ON the truck, we said painted the same time as the cab is painted. You wouldn't have the coverage if they were painted on the truck.

My 64's were painted about 10 years ago and not on the truck by me. See, I know when and how mine were painted, I win.

Depending on the part, those small pieces are usually painted with the body and are actually done by either hanging them in an accessible part of the body or laying them on a flat surface in or on the body. You can often find places on the body that is primered but shows the pattern of the part having been sitting there when the body was painted. Hawkrod

they are only painted on the side you see, same with the corner pieces on the dash and the door bolt covers.the backside looks like heavy overspray at best.

since the entire dash including the recess where the defroster cover fits is painted, i say they are pre-painted before installation.

Several got pretty close, but Hawk hit the home run. I found this while washing the dust out of my floor boards. you can plainly see where the defroster registers were laying when the truck was painted. just another pearl that I discovered hidden with in the Ranger. It really makes a difference when you have a nice original truck to work with. Just like the XL I descovered in the front floor boards

pretty cool. I have some numbers and letters on the underside of my hood. It's cool to see that it lasted this long, I should trace them onto paper and put them back once it's all repainted

Michelle, is that two different shades/finishes of paint? And maybe they had to paint those for your Slick due to a line shortage (out of that particular color) and that was quicker than holding up the line....I guess they painted all the parts seperately, prior to assembly and you have an exception rather than a routine practice... :dontknow:

I guess you missed my post. It was not an exception, it was the normal method of painting small parts. It was cheaper and more cost effective and they were certain that there would be no shade variation (paint shade can be affected by temp and humidity at the time of painting, just because you use the same paint does not mean it will turn out the same color when you spray it!). I have only seen one style of these vent registers. Now I have seen two different styles of the defroster tubes. When I was rebuilding my big Slick I had the defroster tubes out and I also had a pair of defroster tubes from my parts trucks out. The big Slick has a set of moulded rubber tubes whereas the pick up had the moulded cardboard types that are common in the pick ups. Speaking of which, I need a set of defroster tubes for my ranger, if anyone has a set let me know or I guess I can start another thread for that.

Rubber for 65 66 and molded cardboard for 61 to 64

Here ya go. This shot shows the difference between them I have a dozen pair of the larger opening and six pair of the small. They have come off all years.
