Slick 60's

I didnt want to highjack the post from the other day so i started a new one. I installed a T-85/R-11 in my 65 F-100 the same way i did in a 56 Crown Victoria 40 years ago (maybe thats why my memory may be faulty on this). There are no relays, kick down switches in the truck and the governer isnt hooked up. I ran 12v thru a toggle switch to the solenoid. I can manually switch when the unit shifts to over drive when ever i want and in what ever gear i want, so in effect i should have a 6 speed transmission. the only trouble is: if the handle is pushed in, the truck will not move. I have to start out with handle pulled, push handle, flip switch and it will then shift from under to over drive. You also should be able to flip switch back and forth to shift up or down or in and out of over drive. It wont do that. If i am in over drive and flip switch, it will freewheel. does any one have any ideas what the problem may be? thanks for any help.
