Hood safety catch

When you close the hood on your slick, do you have to push the safety catch back in order to clear the square opening that the catch goes into, or should the rounded corner on the catch slide over the edge and into the opening? All the adjustment is taken up from the catch, so I am not sure whats going on.
Thanks,
Derek.

Derek. No. Adjust the catch and latch so that it engages when you close the hood.

I put a little screw in the front of mine so the safety latch is held back a little and goes into hole. Let me know if you want a picture. Tom

It does engage, but won't clear the opening without me pushing it back. There is only one adjustment, and that is where the catch bolts onto the hood. The bolt holes are slotted.

Thanks, I thought about putting a spot weld in that area to push the catch back further, but would like to figure out why this has started in the first place. Must have been this way for a while. The area where it hits has no paint and is dented.
My hood to cowl gap is normal and the hood is in alignment.

The problem was the mount for the safety catch. It was bent.
Thanks for the help!

just wanted to add to this post, my hood seems to latch properly & everything, but I am wondering if anyone can verify that this safety catch is effective? I had a 68 cougar in the past & its hood went sky high on me years ago & I have been paranoid of hoods ever since. If I were to ever nail a pothole etc, and my hood latch somehow worked its way loose, would this safety catch hang on til I could pull over? or would it rip loose with the momentum? just curious.

My hood latch needs to be held back some due to alignment issues. For additional safety/security I installed one of these:

Works like a charm.
