Doc, maybe its time for some spark upgrades. The hotter spark of a Pertronix/ Duraspark/ GM HEI, or even TFI upgrade may further help your pursuit of mileage.

There are lots of threads out there. www.gofastforless.com is interesting reading, as is the Duraspark article over at the evil twin site.

Points are at best "OK" when maintained -- electronic spark systems are superiour in all aspects, except that when they fail, they fail catastrophically. But a Duraspark or GM HEI setup allows you to use cheap off the shelf parts even in that situation. The modules are so cheap, you could even have a spare under the seat.....

I have been using a pertronix for 10 years in my '66 with a 390. One of the best things I have ever done.

Doc,
I put a Pertronix on my 223 a couple years ago. Just drop in like points, adjust gap, 1 extra wire, fired up. Am running plugs at .045 gap. Didn't even adjust timing. So far has been no problems, seems a little smoother, faster cold start. I do carry points & condenser, but haven't needed them.

Pertronix here too. It rocks.
I still have points in my Mini. They are a PITA, have to be adjusted every 1500 miles or so or it starts to hesitate. It's getting a Petronix conversion too. 8)
