Slick 60's

I have a 64 F250 that I am working on and I need help determining if I am going in the right direction.
It has a 262 with granny low 4 speed (T98??) and a Dana 60 with 4:56 gears (old farm truck)
Everything works pretty good on the truck at the moment.

The end goal is daily driver with the ability to tow a car on a full trailer. (like a Uhaul one) The towing will really be rare.

I want to go with an OD transmission because this thing is screaming at 50 already, so I think my options are original tranny with gear vendors or a T5 swap.
Except the cost, which one is the better way to go? Is the T5 acceptable for occasional towing?

Do you think the 262 will have enough umpff to tow a car at 70? I do plan on a disc brake conversion for the front.
The Dana 60 is throwing a wrench into the mix also. If I do the front disc brakes that means 5 lug wheels in the front and the Dana has 8 lugs. I don't want two different lug patterns. Any ideas to get 5 lugs in the back??

Last issue is that I live in small town Oklahoma with only a couple junkyards local. One is in town, but is small, and the other is like 40 min away, so that limits somewhat my picking options.

If anyone has any advice for me, it would be greatly appreciated!!

As far as disc brakes go, I seem to recall member BillW doing a disc swap on his F250, you may find it using the search function, or he may chime in when he sees this post.

honestly, i think if you plan on 70 mph on the freeway i would swap the truck to 5 lug front and back, speedway motors sells the disc brake kits for around 300 and a 9 inch rear end from 57-72 is a direct bolt in for our trucks 73-79 will work but you will have to move the mounting plates.

Ya I kind of figured that I would have to do the 9" swap in the back... I live in housing on base and while I have a garage they tolerate 0 working on your vehicles there. I keep it in the garage and work on weekends and after hours so none the wiser for them. It's pretty much like a HOA. It shouldn't be terribly hard to do the swap without them seeing.

I saw the post on the 8 lug front discs but not much was said on what needed to be done to the spindles to accept the chevy hardware. I might try reserecting that thread and see what comes of it.

You live on base go to the base hobby shop and have a field day working on the slick . Most of these options could be handled in an 8 hour saturday at the hobby shop and most any tool you might need is right there in the tool room .

give that ole 6 a break and go with a 302 and overdrive.
Around here you can buy a running van or car for 500-1500. pull the motor and trans out (rear end too if you want) and slap them in, then sell the vehicle to a scrapper and get some money back.

A 300 six with a 5 speed behind it would be a much better option for towing . Right out of the box a stock 300 six will out torque a 302 all day long . Granted I am doing a 5 liter with an AOd in my 62 but the only thing it will ever haul as long as I own it is my ass .

Remember, Fred took his truck all the way to SlickStock from AZ and back with the T5 transplant behind his 223.

Would that trip have been possible pulling a car at highway speeds? (70 down here)

I do like the idea of a 300 swap though. I need to start trolling the junkyards.

Personally I wouldnt try to tow much of anything at 70 with a 223 regardless of whats behind it 138 HP and around 190 ft lbs of torque isnt much for towing . I would look at a 300 six and 5 speed transplant if I was going to be towing much .

Noticed you liked the 6. Have you cosidered a 7.3? Wouldnt fit in my Twin I-Beam 65 F250 with out some butchering. The straight axel may delete the oil pan issue. Starter and oil cooler had frame clearence as well. Maybe work on yours.

But pull a car at 70 mph ? It ain't gonna happen.

depends what kind of car
bet it would pull a smart car uphill @ 70 no problem

seriously though 300 6 are very stout and good pullers.

I would pick a 300 all day long.I had one in a f250 4x4 and never had one complaint.Good power and lasted over 250,000 miles.

My dad sugested same thing for mine. Decent milage at 70 with 4.10 and 1:1?
