I've searched but can't find an answer for this. On the front drums, if I remove the three large slotted screws, will the brake drum come off? If the screws won't come out, will some heat coax them without damaging anything else? Or do I need to remove the nut on the hub and take the drum and hub off as one? This is a 4x4.
On the rear, do I need to take the axle out first, then the drum?
What is a good repair manual that would help me?
Thanks

Some heat on those screws helps a lot
Just get the heads hot & let em cool & squirt penetrating oil
Usually have to "back off" the shoes to remove drums
The rears are the same way

The Ford shop manual says to remove the three Tinnerman nuts. As if it were that simple. I had the same problem you are having and had to take the truck to a shop to have them heated up in order to remove them. Since then, I've had no problems removing the nuts. I had a difficult time finding replacement drums and have some cross-reference part numbers if you find you need new drums.

I had the same problem with my 4wd. I took an old 5/8 chisel and ground it to fit the slots in the screws. Then I was able to use my impact driver on them, starting with the lowest setting the vibration eventually got them all loose, no heat. As others have said don't forget to back off your shoe adjustment. When it came time to reassemble the brakes I went to Fastenal and got hex screws so I won't have to deal with those stupid slotted screws again. btw I was very disappointed in the quality of the new drums I ordered from napa I took them back. I took my old drums and had them turned and I sandblasted and painted them. Seems like much better material in the old drums than the new imported junk. I hope this helps, good luck with your project. Best regards Bill
