Steering colume removal on 61-64 F100-250

Okay,
since there is nothing in my Shop Manual on this subject, besides the obvious of the colume drop bolts inside the cab, is there something that releases the shaft off of the box that I'm missing?? Is it pressed on to the splines coming out of or going into the box, or does it have a jam nut somewhere on the shaft that I'm missing. I'd like to replace the floor seal and would like to do it right. I've been all over this thing and can't find anything to release it from the box.

It's one solid shaft from the steering wheel through the worm gear.

Fred,
so what you saying is there is no seperating the two unless you take it off down at the worm gear? Thats very strange theres no way to pull it apart otherwise.

The way I have done this is to remove everything and get the steering column down to the shaft. remove pitman arm and unbolt box from frame. Pull box and shaft out of cab. When I pulled the box/shaft out of my truck, my exhaust pipe coming off of the 223 manifold almost prevented me from removing it, but there was just enough clearance to get it out.

Once you have the column off the shaft it is easiest to unbolt the sector from the frame and pull the whole piece out from the bottom, not up through the cab.

Couldn't agree more, and the reason my verbiage says to pull it "out" of the cab and not pull it "in" to the cab to remove.

Steering colume removal on a 61-64 F100 F250

Well thanks for the advice. Think I'll install the floor/colume gasket differently than what I was planning on. I'll just split it on the narrowest part9one side) and pull it over the colume and glue the 2 splits back together. It'll last as long as I own the truck.

thanks again guys,

I only check here in the morning, but it looks like everybody has already answered your questions. If all you want to do is redo the floor seal, splitting it is the easiest way. If you do need to take out the column and box, take it out the bottom, I have done it both ways and it is a whole lot easier.
