Cab Mount Replacement
Cab Mount Replacement
How can I easily replace cab mounts w/o having to remove the cab with a lift? I thought of unbolting 1 side at a time and jacking the body up enough to get the old out and the new in, but worried about tweaking something.

Thats the way to do it.
Take the nuts off the bolts out first, but leave the bolts in place. Put a piece of 4x4 wood under one corner at a time and jack it up with your floor jack. Start at the front, drivers side worked well for me, pull the bolt, pry the old donut out and put the new one back in. Put in the new bolt. Go to the other side, then to the rear mounts and repeat the process until you're done.
When everything is ready, then you put the nuts back on.
The core support mounts work pretty well the same way, but they're a little more complicated because so much sheet metal is involved. Much easier without the motor and radiator in the truck.
Good luck.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.

If your cab mounts are rusted out and you don't mind abit of travel, I could save you a ton of work. I have a cab here that only needs a small floor patch and corners. The mounts, steps, lower sills, center support all solid, dash isn't butchered either.

I have to do the same thing on my '66 1/2 ton, although the front cab mounts are rusty. By prying a bit, I found I can lift the cab about an inch upwards without loosening any bolts. Back ones are fine.
I ordered the sheet metal replacement panels from LMC. If I've got good metal around the pedestal, can I just clean it up and tack weld these over the old mounts?
thanks,
Doug

I wouldn't try to just tack on the replacement mounts over the old ones. Drill out the spot welds, chisel em off, and weld the new mounts in place. They probably wouldn't fit right over the old ones anyway. Make sure you have good solid floor to weld to also. After all these are the pieces that mount the part of the truck YOU sit in to the frame, a weak repair here would be unsafe and you would reget it later when you ended up doing it again.

Dave, do you have round mounts like the 2wd or the square f350/4x4 type on the front ? round ones you can buy new, square you cant.
the factory square mount is on the bottom of the stack in this pic, the other ones on top are because this cab is now on a 72 highboy 4x4 frame and i needed them to get the cab level.

thats right, you can get new ones for the rear.
fwiw, the square ones were used on the big trucks and busses till the late 70s.you might find a good set on one of those.

the round ones are a bit thicker, so you will not be sitting level anymore.nuwave wrote:I dont see why i cant put the round rubber in place of the square one. if it's bolted down tight, its gotta be better than the rotten piece of square rubber i have now. yea i know..square peg in a round hole!
someone here offered me a good set but i cant remember who because i did not write it down.

I'm replacing them on my 4x4 in the near future....option one: search for them as they have a ford part # on them.....option two: make them up myself....three came out OK, one I had to use a torch on and kinda burnt it

I re-read my post and found it misleading....
when I said
"three came out OK, one I had to use a torch on and kinda burnt it"
I meant when I was removing the old ones....one bolt was rusted so bad I had to torch it off, burning the rubber beyond re-use....the other 3 actually look like they could be re-used, no cracks or rot....so I will use them as a template, and order some rubber or urethane sheet in the same thickness, and make up some new ones....I own a machine shop, so it shouldnt be a problem, although I havent had much luck punching holes through rubber that thick....I'll post when I try this....
