Body Seam Cleanup

Post by nuwave »

What good methods should be used to clean all body seams of filler other than sandblasting?

Some of my seams have developed rust, but it is just at the surface and most likely due to the filler collecting moisture.

A wire wheel on a 4 1/2 inch grinder will be about the best way to get it unless you want to have the truck dipped. It's the best way I have found so far. If you find a better way please share!

Theres a method thats on the internet called something like electrolytic cleaning. You dip your metal parts in a plastic tank and put battery charger leads on it. it causes the oxidation to lift up. I use it on smaller stuff. Don't use it on anything plated!! IT comes off. One guy I saw dipped his cabs using a kids wading pool and swore by it.

Horsepower thanks for that link it looks like some really good stuff on there.

On the rust removel with the tub and water it is Electrolytic cleaning they did it on power block tv a few weeks ago. They used 2 amps from a battery charger and cleaning soda. I have been thinking of dunking my whole fame to get all the surface rust off. But here is a link on info on that.

I just did the Elwctrolisys cleaning on all the front suspention parts for my 67. It works great! I used Borax and 6A 12V DC from a Batt charger.

I think if you want to JUST clean out the seams, I would use a whire wheel on an angle grinder. It should clean out everything. You can probably cut out a good portion of it with a razor blade and then do the wire wheel.

I have had sucess using and air powered angle die grinder a roto-loc disc adapter and 3" thin brown fiber surface prep discs. use small backing adapter stick edge of disc into seam it removes rust and old seam sealer but does not grind good metal.
just an idea seemed to work ok. the ones I used were from wurth.

Thansk 4 the replies. I will try the cut out/wire wheel trick. I tried a little 3M body panel filler on a test spot. It fills in and sands down good. Not sure if long term if it might crack, but I like it better than Bondo.
