Pulling the steering wheel

Post by good2bea9 »

So I attempted to pull the steering wheel off the other day and it will NOT budge. I removed the nut, applied the wheel puller and turned with no success. It is a 66 F250 4x4 with the 3spd column shift. Any ideas on how to break her free? Thanks.

Tighten the puller well and whack it with a hammer on the top of the bolt. Usually pops them free first time. Hawkrod

Will do that this Friday. Have to pick up another puller as I watched the bolt head twist and not the rest of the bolt! I will let you know if it works out for me. Thanks.

make sure you use a steering wheel puller, not a gear puller.

you have to hit the center bolt of the puller when pressure is on it to shock it loose.

Spray a little PB Blaster around the shaft after removing the nut and tap gently around the whole area to get it to seep in. Wait a while and spray a little more. Then try the tips above. It should come off easily.

I found this out the hard way. I kept cranking on the puller and ended up damaging the top of the shaft.
