Out of Money...

Post by my66longbed »

Well the wife has just informed me that I am out of money for awhile. javascript:emoticon(':(')
Sad

So I thought I would upload some pics of where I am at so far. In short this is what I have done thus far:

1. Dropped the truck 3 inches.
2. Converted to front disc brakes
3. Removed the straight 6 and replaced with a stroked out 442.
4. NV4500 5 speed trans, with all new clutch
5. rebuilt rear end. Eaton clutch pack with new ring and pinion
6. Converted to power steering
7. sway bars, with steering stabilizer
8. Stainless steel hardware/ or grade 8
9. rebuilt new rear drum brakes.

And now for the pics:

well I like what you have so far.
About how much horsepower do you
think the motor is making? And does a
stroker motor perform better than a regular motor?

The motor, well we did the math and we think she'll produce 625 to 650 at the flywheel, with around 600 foot pounds of torque. Well this is my first stroker motor, or I can't really speak on the performance. We have not fired it up yet.

What coil springs are you using under the front end? All in all a very nicely detailed project.

Looks great! The motor looks very CLEAN with just plain two colors, I like that much better than when people go crazy with 8 different colors on an engine. What kind of pulley's and brackets are those, I want to get some like that for my 351W...
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for all the feedback! This has been a great project to work on, and I have meet so many nice people on this site.

Slick Fan: The Tranny is a NV4500 from a 94 Dodge 1 ton. I got the adapter from Advanced Adapters to mate the trans with the ford bell housing. I was looking for awhile to find a good used NV4500 and just couldn't find on in good enough shape. So I picked this one up from A1 Transmission in Denver CO.

jakdad: The springs are all stock. Just had them cleaned up and powder coated.

Shawn F.: Thanks! I am very proud of this engine. The pulley's are from March performance. They have a whole new line of pulley's for FE motors. They also have some awesome setups fore the 351. www.marchperformance.com/

My next step is to get the cab to my body guy. Once I can get the cab on this, things will really start to come together... The goal is to have is ready for SS08. Again thanks for all the feedback. This is my first restoration and my first slick, and learning as I go.

I am really impressed with how you guys make so many crossplatform/manufacturer mods to your trucks. I guess necessity is the mother and all that.
That truck will be a real showstopper when its done.
Someday I'll get another slick :(

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like it would definitely be a cheaper alternative to a Tremec, or equivalent. :D
I may just have to test out a setup like that in my '76 dentside. woohoo.gif

Looks good. Wish my unit was that far, but don't count on being finished quickly once you get the body on. It's taken JC 2 years to get the wiring to where it's at now.

cab floor clearance??

Post by slixtyfive »

I'm just curious - did you trial-fit the cab over that transmission?? Are there any clearance issues??

Also, just curious about availability/pricing of that transmission and a rebuild for one. You mention it took awhile to find a suitable trans - what were the issues?

Thanks!

castruck -- Thank you, and I hear you on all points. I have a very good body man. I have been including him through the entire process so he has been very involved and has helped me make some good choices thus far which will help when the body work is ready to be done.

Slxtyfive -- I did not test fit the trans with the cab. But this is what I did do. I found this "howto" http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/ ... ssion.html

that walks you through all the steps needed to get the job done. Now in the howto he used a 67 F100, as you know different body style. Well just so happens I have a 68 sitting outside, So using the howto, and comparing that against my 68 and then comparing that against my 66 I should be okay. It will be a very snug fit, I will need to relocate the shifter hole and notch the trans mount but everything should fit. You can easily find these transmissions. You are looking for a DODGE early 90s trans. And not one from a Diesel. The reason why I had so many problems was my first NV4500 was from a GMC, the second was from a Chevy. So that's when I found this article and found a shop who knew more about transmissions then I did... It all comes down to the input shaft on needing a standard DODEGE input shaft to work with the adapter and clutch. If you look you can pick up a good used one for around 700. I ended up spending 1400 all together on mine cause I broke down and went to A1 Transmission in Denver. The gave me a good deal on the NV4500 I already had, they swapped out the input shaft and gave me a warranty with it as well. To be honest most of the headaches I suffered on getting the right NV4500 were all self inflicted... :-)

Well I was out of money, then I got some and went right out and spent it... I thought I would send out a update with were I am at with my 66 longbed.

About a week ago I got all my body work expect for the bed over to my body guy to start on. We are fixing all the rust such as the cab mounts, floor, fenders, etc. All the common places you find rust. We also filled in the gas neck hole as I am relocating the gas tank, filled in the holes on the fenders where the emblems go, and patched in on the dash where the PO had hacked up the dash to put in a different radio.

You see I am on a very long trip right now over seas so I wanted to get my body work over to him before I left that way when I return I come and get the cab and all the front metal which should be all jammed and in primer, and drop off the box... Once he is done with the box I take everything back to him and he shoots the rest in one shot. I thought I would upload some pics of me loading everything up to go to the body guy.

I know the pics aren't that exciting but I thought I would share. My body guy is taking pictures as he goes so I should have some more work in progress pics when I get back around late sept...
