short bed frame? I found the '90 on Craigslist, 6-cylinder, 5 speed, 4x4. No body or box. $500.

According to this
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_li ... bases.html
the wheelbase is 3" longer on a '90 shorty than a shorty uni, which is 114".
On a 4x4 you might be able to make that look OK. The cab mounts wont be in the right postion or anything, but it could be done.

It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

Be sure to post a build with pictures if you decide to go for it. Like Johnny said, it can be done, with a bunch of fabrication.
I've been wanting to do that with a 94 Bronco parts truck. In the case of the Bronco, the wheelbase is considerably shorter, with a wider track. I've considered shortening the uni bed sides to match the wheelbase, and attempting to fabricate a "Bronco" removable top section. Starting with 4x4 components would appear to allow spacing the body to the frame and accomodating the additional width without it looking terribly awkward.
I've just got too many (easier) projects on my plate without tying up resources on a project with obvious as well as un-noticed challenges.
If you wish to consider it, I have been meaning to document dimensions while I've got the two stripped-down applications within close proximity. I could easily measure it out tomorrow, barring exceptional rain.
