Update time!
the truck has been utterly reliable, easy to work on, and my little girl (17 months) asks me every day to take her for a ride. She always says "again!" when we are back home after some errands.

Had a good long day to finally do some stuff.

First I did the stereo, after pulling the old crappy one out, i just couldn't bear to cut the dash. Sooo, i utilized some wood from a planter box and attached the receiver to the ceiling. Now when I fiddle with the knobs I feel like a trucker messing with his CB. lol.
The wires ran really easily down the insides of the pillars and into the doors where I put some nice 6x9's. It pretty damn loud, i am pleased. The nice part is i can back up to the beach or campfire, and open up the doors and really rock the party, until the battery dies.

The big mirrors were falling off and rusty so I ditched them and just stuck a little motorcycle mirror up there. might be too rat-roddy, but whatever. I think it's neat. I also cut off the bumper and am getting a smaller very simple one fabbed up, but I have to admit to really liking the way it looks with nothing back there.

I can relate your truck looks better without that big old honking piece of iron bumper haning down in the back. Mines a 65 F100 4wd without a rear bumper.


Thats mine without the same bumper you had on yours. I did find the proper factory contour bumper in metal at a swap meet for $5. I just have to get it straightened and rechromed. And come up with some bumper brackets.

i put this on the front of mine with a warn 8000 lb winch and welded ears for the towbar i used to pull it from Alaska to
Utah.

gave the stock front to the guy that bought the wrecker.

it's all welded in there and there's a rusty old Sears winch in there, you can just barely see cable coming out in the very center.

Do you plan to keep the front winch & bumper?
Does the winch work?

i was working on the separate uni bed for mine. unfortunately i did not get the chance to finish and install it. a fair amount of work wasted which really grinds my gears but in the end im happy that my truck is here and working. i will just have to fix the bed it has for now and look for another long uni for cheap in the future.

I'm in the same boat with you, ICEMAN..... I like the front and rear "worker" bumpers on Eliott's truck.

As we all can agree -- It just all depends on what your end game is for your truck; a weekend cruise night ride, a dune or mud bogger, a firewood hauler, a stock-to-the-bone daily driver, a slammed & chopped custom with wild paint and drivetrain, etc. It's just all good. I am simply glad to see these old iron beasts get some lovin' -- rather than just get hauled off to the crusher and be made into some chinese-made trinkets or widgets.

My old guy is pretty much retired. Used as a pickup truck from time to time and just sitting around and looking good otherwise. I figure both of my (previous to me by how they looked when I got them) hard working slick 4wds earned some rest and respect. sorry for the hijack

This truck is a dump-runner, playground cruiser (that sounds weird), home improvement hauler and pretty much my man-cave at the moment as our house is tiny and there's no garage.

I'd offer the old bumper/hitch to whoever wants it, but, all the brackets were bolted AND welded to the frame so everything got cut. It's just a hundred pounds of dirty metal at this point.

I haven't changed the tires yet, going to wait for these ones to wear out before i replace them, which will probably take a decade.

I don't think the winch works, the wiring in this beast is pretty screwy and i have been pulling out all the accessory stuff and replacing the important stuff. I plan on keeping the front bumper yes, i am going to cut off that odd flat extension in the center, but the bumper will remain. though prehaps in black. ICEMAN, if i had a bumper like that, i would wear it proudly on the front, back and sides of my rig. The tranny and rear end are escaping me at the moment, but i remember discovering that they were both pretty much the lowest ratios going, which would explain why i have never used 1st gear.

Oh and I forgot to mention, I replaced the headlights with those halogen jobbies from the LMC catalog. they are a great improvement. I am sure it sounds boring, but i like really good headlights, for safely reasons.

as far as 'end game', i don't know. The soul of this truck is the ability to haul 1500lbs worth of s$%t through any road in any weather, and i am not going to compromise that, but i do like customs and rods. I am going to keep hauling stuff and tweaking the appearance of it for a while. maybe there can be a sub-genre of high-boy low-riders, if you get my drift. Or not, and i'll just look crazy.

Also, I would just like to take a moment to salute the guys that restore and polish these trucks. I am not in your league and I hope you don't think i am abusing a slick. I love this truck and will bend it to my will, but i assure you, nothing too crazy is going to happen. (like that weird 63 merc that got posted the other day)

it will haul a lot more than 1500 lb

took a load of scrap iron 100 miles in my wifes 66 f100 4x4 gvwr 5600
i weighed in @ 7420 lb. thats 1800 over and the truck never complained nor did it sag.

less then thrilling update:

So, a few days ago I hopped into the truck to go home from work, and when i went to start it, hooo lordy it made an awful sound. It sounded like a metal toolbox being thrown into a propeller. But the engine pretty much always starts instantly, and vroom it started up and sounded fine. Drove home, consulted a friend and pulled the starter off to see what was up.

Kablooie: please notice the tiny nub of a single tooth that still somehow managed to turn the engine over:


So, two questions for the Slick 60s Brain Trust:

1. what the hell happened to the starter?
2. do this ring gear make me look fat? (can i still use it? please say yes)



P.S. I asked my buddy Dave why my starter exploded, he said "because the fuse burned down"

that ring gear looks ok i have run much worse.
not the first starter i have seen like that, likely cheap rebuild and bendix gear was defective / cracked and blew out. nosecone and bendix can be replaced so keep the motor if you can.

thanks man. I didn't think that starter could be saved, i won't toss it now, though.
