Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
Been a while since i updated. Been busy. went to the show me f100 run in Branson mo last weekend. This weekend got back to the truck and spent 2 afternoons trying to fix the core support. it was all rusted at the bottom. got the core support solid again, not quite done though and got the radiator mounts built and the fenders bolted on for mock up.

A couple more pics. I got the radiator mounts finished up. Since the radiator, condensor, trans cooler and power steering cooler is all built into one bundle i was able to use the factor rubber mounts and put them into tabs i welded on the frame. I also made a couple angle iron brackets and welded them to the top of the core support so i could use the factory upper mounts and bolt them on.
The factory hoses all fit, the only ones that needed trimmed were the lower hose from the engine to the oil cooler and the upper radiator hose. I also got one of my inner fenders notched for the ifs and have it mocked up. once i find another fender support for the passenger side i can get started on that side.

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
Well I got to work on the truck a little bit this weekend. I ended up building the column drop and getting the steering column mount finished. I was able to use the crown vic shift cable brackets that unbolt from the base of the column and weld them to my gm column and got the shifter working good. I pulled the engine back off the frame and repainted the firewall. I had painted it with rattle can but I went ahead and roughed it up and used implement enamel with a hardner. It came out much better.
the core support and inner fenders are headed today to the sand blaster. I also found the underdrive pulleys I bought for my 01 bullitt mustang that i never installed and the work great on this engine.
On a side note..after using photobucket as my picture host for quite a while, I am trying out imgur. I have more pics but i havent figured out how to resize them yet so more to come later.

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
I got to work on the unibody Sunday. I had already gotten most of the filler work done and 2 coats of primer on it. I sanded it, primed again, sanded and put the color on. I am just using the implement paint with a hardener on the core support, firewall, and inner fenders but it seems to work really well. When i do the body and interior paint I am planning on base/clear as long as my budget will allow.

I know the body work is not perfect but for the core support and inner fenders I am not that concerned. This is going to be a driver, i wouldnt want it perfect.

its looking great! I am impressed with the mod engine etc.keep plugging alone.. before you know it you will be riding....while a lot of us are still building! keep good notes on the mod motor install...I will likely one day be doing the same and need some help!

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
Just a quick update. I spend this weekend running wiring and integrating the factory efi harness with the rebel wire harness I bought. For example, for the ecm switched power wire, i feed the "coil" wire off the rebel harness. I also had to wire up the starter relay and the transmisson indicator switch.
Overall, I got the engine to start up and run using the gm column. it will sit and idle and rev up fine. I havent hooked up a scan tool yet to see the codes (im sure there are alot as I deleted egr and evap)
Looks like the truck is going on the back burner for a couple weeks though due to Illinois deer hunting season and then thanksgiving.

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
Well I did get to work on my truck friday night and sunday. I got some more wiring done for the cooling fans and was able to connect my scan tool (autoengunity) and check codes and graph some 02 sensor and coolant temps. I was also able to check codes. I have a few but they are all egr/evap and rear 02 sensor related. Since I deleted all of these im not surprised. For some reason my alternaotor is not charging but i think it is just a bad alternator. I have a reman that i am going to throw on to try.
My major accomplishment is the 9" rearend is out and the 8.8 from the crown vic is in. I flipped the axle while i was at it. Now i am going to have to mess with my front coils and get it down some. If i cant get it all the way level bringing the front down to match i am planning on installing air shocks and getting the rear up to match if need be.

Off Topic, Deer season went well.

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
like the build, what was the reasons for swapping in the 8.8 instead of the 9"?
Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
I am going to be running late model mustang wheels so i wanted a wider rear end for one and the 8.8 is a disc brake unit. oh and i already had the rearend. I was going to flip the axle anyway so for just a little more work I get disc brakes.

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
So I know i am really bad at documenting the progress of my truck but with the holidays things have been slow. I did get the shock mounts welded to the rear end and shocks on the truck. Then I made the exhaust from the x-pipe back. I was able to use the stock tail pipes off my bullitt mustang I had and with some slight manipulation with a cut off saw and welder I was able to get them to work. All i have left on the exhaust is to cut finish the tail pipes from behind the rear axle to the tips. I used a set of welded thrush mufflers that are flowmaster 40 knock-offs. The truck sounds like a mustang gt with flowmaster exhaust. I really like it.
I took the front struts apart and cut the springs down 1-1/4 coils each. helped drop the front end down. although the picture is kind of deceiving, it does sit lower in the front end.
I took it down the road and it does a good burnout. shifts good and stops awesome. the steering is nice and tight.

Looking good bet it was a wee bit nippy on the drive with no windshield . Whats funny is how much our trucks could be twins with the color anyways .

I've been watching for this thread to come back up.
Congrats on the first drive.
Is that the CV gas tank in the bed? Would you also post on how you setup the fuel system?
Thanks
Randall

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
Yes, That is the stock crown vic fuel tank in the back. I used the stock tank, pump, and fuel filter/bracket assembly. I just used unions and 5/15 steel brake line sticks (60") to run from the tank outlet to the filter assembly that i mounted on the side of the frame. From the filter to the engine and then back from the engine straight back to the tank. For wiring, the pcm toggles the relay when fuel is needed (prime for 2 seconds when key is cycled on and when the engine is running). I haven't finished final wiring of the pump but I am also using the inertia switch from the car in the event of a collision so it will kill the pump
When I stripped out the parts car, I made sure to cut the fuel lines so that I had the quick connects and plenty of steel to hook onto with the steel line.

Here is a video of my truck running..2 problems, the sound quality is bad and I was holding the phone the wrong way and when it uploaded it is sidways. So if you dont mind tilting your head, take a look.
A friend of mine was driving it so i could hear it from the outside.

Re: bcook07's Unibody Build
Since its a little easier to get at then most, could you measure the tank for me? I've tried to get them on line but all I get are capacities. And maybe a pic of how you've got it mounted?
The one in my donar was squashed to the point I couldn't get it out.
