Transmission interchange question.

Post by oldtruckfanatic573 »

Hey guys I know it's a rookie question but I have a 66 with a bad 3 speed column shift manual transmission behind a 352. There is a guy locally that has a 74 ford 3 speed column shift manual transmission for sale cheap that works fine that was behind a 300 I6. I'm wondering if his transmission will bolt up to my bell housing. My trans has the electric overdrive (not working) but I don't know if it matters. I'd just love to be able to use first gear again. Mine was broken when I bought the truck and makes horrible noises in first gear. You can start in second but the clutch is also wasted and has been since I bought it probably because of the bad first gear and starting in second. Anyone have any insight on these transmissions? Thanks. Tim

OK, I'll drop my half cent in on this, As far as bolting to the bell housing I say they are the same. Input shaft should be the same also. Where you need to look is the length overall, Being one is overdrive and one is not there may be a problem with drive shaft length. Leonard

I don't care about the driveline length at all. I have a driveline shop nearby that can make me a new one. If it will fit the bell and clutch splines I'm thrilled. Thanks a ton.

They should interchange, but you'd be best off to pull them and measure before buying just to make sure. You need to compare the input spline teeth count, diameter and overall length form the front of the transmission. What are you going to do with your old transmission? I be interested in buying it for parts.
