some basic questions/ first post
background:
just bought a 1963 f100 short bed custom cab with a 292 and a 3 speed. it's an unrestored survivor that runs (kind of) and drives. this is my first old vehicle.
i am wondering about my rear end. i assume these came with a 9 inch rear? the axle in my truck looks to me to be an 8.8. or did 9 inch rears have inspection plates? the ones i'm familiar with did not.
i'm also wondering if anyone can direct me to an detailed explanation (pictures would be great) of replacing the accelerator pump check valve and diaphram on my 2v carb. my research has led me to believe that the engine stalling on hills and when revving from idle are due to these components. i've never worked on a carb before so i want to have a good understanding of what to do before i screw anything up haha
PS i have searched but haven't found what i'm looking for.

If it has an inspection plate, it is not a Ford nine inch.
As far as the carburetor, there should be some good pics and tutorials on line. It's a pretty simple process. It should be a matter of four screws and a few minutes

without having the running, take off the air cleaner and look down the carb. Give the throttle a few pumps and watch for fuel to squirt down the center. If there is not a nice fuel stream then you need some carb work but if the fuel sprays out nicely then look elsewhere. Check points, timing, sparkplugs, old fuel, rotor and cap
why put off till tommorow what you can put off alltogether

Most likely you have a Dana 44 rear end. Ford used these for the limited slips.

If your rear axle code listing on the warranty plate starts with a letter, it is a limited slip. Most limited slip axles available in 63/64 were high numerical ratios.

Is that your truck in your avatar? If so it looks like a 64 bed. You might want to check your data plate as to the actual year. It wouldn't be the first time someone thought they had a specific year truck and didn't.

There were numerous rear ends available for this truck. Mine has a Dana 60 limited slip with 4.09 gears in it. It was ordered that way There should be a tag on one of the bolts of the inspection cover with the ratio. As far as the carb is concerned if it needs the accelerator pump it is as simple as taking out 4 screws, replacing the diaphram and putting the 4 screws back in. The diaphram is available seperately you do not need to get a complete kit. But as a previous poster stated if it is squirting fuel into the throat it is not the acc. pump.

One of the many things I learned on this site is that pictures help alot. We like pictures!
If the spring perches do not look as if they were modified, chances are its not an 8.8
If you post the vin number someone should be able to decode it for you. I am willing to bet it a 64 bought in 63. I had that problem with my 66.
The shop manuals are available in original,reprint, and cd form. If you are patient You usually can find one on e-bay cheaper than the standard posted price, but wait till you get the vin number decoded before you but the wrong year.

needs quite bit of rust repair on the body but the chassis is solid and hey, it runs and drives. lights, wipers, and horn all functional.
the f10ce501986 is the VIN. axle code is a2.

only decent picture i have at the moment. can't read the axle tag anymore but i think you guys are right. looks way too big to be a 8.8, must be a 44.
what'd the 63 bed look like?

Your truck is a 1/2 ton 292 2bbl assembled in Mahwah where ever that is? Built in February. Rear end assuming you meant A2 is a 3.92 ratio limited slip if it is a 64. In 1963 they did not have that box. That is why we think it is a 64. Do you have the rest of the info on the door tag? Is the trans code an F? Look on top of the hogshead on the axle there may be a number cast in the housing. If it is a Dana which was actually Spicer back then it will be a 44 or a 60 cast on top, also the cover is held on with 10 bolts and the tag should be on the left bottom bolt as you are looking at the back of the rear axle.

Now I have a question I just looked at my VIN tag and the axle code is B5 My shop manual does not show that axle code. But I have the original order sheet and it was ordered with a 4.10 limited slip Spicer 60 axle. I know this is the original axle for sure as I am the second owner. Any help with why B5 is not in the shop manual?

I dunno why the B5 code isn't listed in the shop manual, but it is listed in the 1957/63 & 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalogs.
The 60.2 is not a Dana 60! Dana 60 only installed in F250's all of which have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

What is the difference from a 60 to a 60.2? Just the axle shafts for 5 lug versus 8 lug? And the bearing assemblies on the ends of the axles?

i plan on doing an oil change and filter, plugs and wires, and a probably a distributor cap, points, and a condensor after christmas when i have some spare change. could i run 15w40? reason i ask is rotella comes in that weight and i heard it still has zddp in it and that zddp is essential for old engines, want to know what you guys run in yours? are you guys using premium and a lead additive in your gas? i plan to.

Everybody has a favorite oil. For me I like a thick oil in an older high mileage engine so I try to find straight 50 weight.

What BWF said! Rotella 15w works well in the older trucks IMO. I personally see no reason to run premium unless your particular engine needs it. Regular is a better choice for most stock vehicles; additional anti-knock additives add no value if not needed, and anyone who tells you premium has more beneficial additives is stressing a rather weak point, IMO. I personally don't care for additives, but a lead substitute is not a bad idea, more bang for the buck than a continuous diet of premium at current price differentials..
