Loaning tools

Today I was at my favorite u-pick it yard. I always take a lot of tools one never knows what is new in the lot. I once went for a couple of steel wheels and came home with a 270 Red Ram Hemi engine. I get approached a lot to borrow tools I never say no and have never lost a tool until today. I loaned a guy a Crescent wrench and pair of Vise Grips. He never returned them he must have been Christmas shopping for free tools. This will not keep me from loaning a guy a tool but I may quit loaning out my USA tools and keep some China junk with me. Just wondering what you would do when approached to borrow your tools.

well truthfully, I tend not to lend tools unless I know the person and that they'll take care of it/I'll get it back quickly...But at the same time I make my living with em so I may be a little more miserly then most.

I kinda like the cheap china idea, if I was gonna loan out something I'd rather it be a harbor freight tool then one of my strap-on's

To stop this problem at my house, I made a check out list, put it on a clipboard and hung it by the garage door. This way when I forget who borrowed it, I can find out.
I did this after someone borrowed my soldering gun and forgot to return it (1 year later). I was almost ready to go buy another one when I remembered who had it.
This has worked out really well and would suggest it to everybody.
And yes that is normal for most of us in our mid 50's to be that senile.

when somebody asks to borrow my stuff, I explain to them how to use it
like this....
" this angle grinder works good, but your gonna need a new stone for it
and remember that the safety switch is taped on
and be sure to wear goggles , I took the shield off
and don't touch that bare spot on the cord
and when you change the stone you will have to use an impact wrench
cause the lock broke
and if it smells hot after a couple minutes, let it cool down
........

Here's an idea for remembering who you loaned things to. They say the mind is the 2nd thing to go, but I can't remember what goes 1st.

I have my tools in my shop that I use to make my living I never loan those out. They are my tools along with my my brothers and Dad's who were both professional mechanics before massive heart attacks took their lives. I take good tools but not my money makers when I travel. I also keep a lot of tools at home those I do loan out to neighbors and my kids. I am just trying to get past the ass who stole my tools at the wrecking yard. Takes some pretty big begonias to ask to borrow tools knowing your gonna steal them.

I only loan tools to three guys I know well. We all have the understanding that you lose it or break it you replace it. Only once, one of the guys broke a Wright 1/2" drive ratchet and brought me replacement that next day. Everyone else, I tell them where the equipment rental place is across town.

Kid and I learned a lesson about loaning out my nice magnetic towing lights....

the last few that wer loand out of my shop by some one on permennet vacation, got broke or never returned
