crown vic swap

Post by Tonkatoy »

I'm about to start my crown vic frame swap on my 64 custum. while looking for the right cv to come along I want to take off the cab and repair the rear mounts. first question is is there a way to take off the cab without removing the steering box it looks like one piece? Second, is it better or practical to remove the entire nose as one piece (both fenders and grill, radiator support)?
any and all tips will be welcome, thanks

I find it easier to remove the nose in one piece, fewer nuts to bust.

The steering box unbolts from the frame with 3 or 4 bolts, take the arm off first, then bring out thru the floor. Much easier than try to ease the cab up and back 4 feet.

Welcome to the club!!

Welcome, Tonka toy.
1st of all is your truck a short wheelbase truck? Because that's what works on a Crown Vic. Yes, you can pull the cab off and leave the steering column and box intact. You will have to remove the steering wheel and any connected wiring from the steering column. Bear in mind you will have to lift the cab the WHOLE length of the steering column so it will have to go quite high.

Probably best to take the doors off so it isn't so heavy, and have some means of lifting it approx 3'. You just remove the removable pan and gasket surrounding the column on the floor..
Yes you can take the whole front clip off in one piece, but the CV frame is longer at the front than you will need, the frame of the CV has to be cut off at the rad support as it does not go under it on a CV conversion, it butts up to it.

Hopefully kid or Mike Carson will be along, guys who have done one already, I have only seen 2 of them.

Best o' luck!

JC

Edit.. well there's mike carson beat me to it LOL
It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..
