The mustang started out as a car for the Goyam (the ignorant rabble that make up the majority of a group). Ford tried to make a very simple car that a poor man with no taste could afford to buy. I am not even sure if the 64.5 model even had an AT. It was designed to utilize as many components from other Ford cars of that year such as Fairline headlight bezels (I think).
It was Fords entrant into the VW class.
The Thunderbird was slightly different. Although the original was also supposed to be able to use parts from other models, it was designed as a personal sports car, although it never really became one. But in 1961, with the 'torpedo' model, Ford decided to change their concept to a personal luxury vehicle. All the toys, all the power.
But the Torino was (what I thought) the perfect 4+ passenger car. You could even get it in a wagon. I wish I had one of those wagons today. I probably would never have gotten rid of it, nor have purchased a slick ( uhm ... , nah, I would still have gotten a slick).
IMVHO, the Honda civic is a much better example of what the original mustang concept was. Especially the hatchback.
I did not intend to upset anyone. And I hope I didn't.

Oh, and as intonation is so difficult to emote through words,
if this isnt just a bunch of babbling nonsence, I dont know what is
I don't think the Mustang is a bad car. However, I hate how people think they're special because they have one. Ford Mustangs are just about like Model Ts. They're everywhere in every condition. They're pretty to look at. But I'm tired of seeing nothing but Mustangs at car shows. I go to a show and find a slick, it's some bastardized abomination with a Brand X Motor and trans. Nobody but us crazy mofos wants to drive a 40 year old pickup, THAT makes us special :p

no offense but I dont like how everyone thinks the mustang is the only performance car ford ever made. it makes me not like mustangs all the much.
while we are on the subject... WHY would the guys that build the repop 67 fastbacks choose the 67? the 69/70 body is alot harder to come by and the best looking IMO .

Gotta dissagree Bigtrip, 1967 Fastback is the best looking Classic Mustang ever built, IMHO.
I would never say that the Mustang is the only performance car Ford ever built. I Loved my 71 Torino GT, Also love my Mustangs. They are 2 different cars, Torino - mid sized muscle car, Mustang - Pony car. I wouldn't tend to agree that the Torino handled better at all - wasn't meant too. Pony cars combine muscle and handling, mid sized muscle cars combine performance with abit more comfort, both have their place.
Alot of Mustang people consider the new GT the best Mustang Ford has ever made. They factor handling, looks, performance, and reliabilty, etc. Heck they even get around decent in snow.
I never think I am better than anyone else because I have one (2), I am damn proud of them both though. I am also proud of my Uni for as far from finished as it is. Part of this is just simply that I work hard for them all, not just to make $ to pay for them but for what I put into them personally.
I can some it up this way, when I put the 85 in a show the best time I have is when people walk up to the car and tell me all about the 85 GT they or their brother etc.etc. had and they go on and on. I get a huge kick out of sharing the car with people to put it simply.
Oh Doc, no offense taken here. How could I be offended when you never cease to make me laugh.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 71-73 big Stangs. They are abit more like a Torino though.
BTW want a nice cruiser? 71-73 Mustang ragtop, small block with an AOD swap. Definately a nice ride.

I hated those final Mustangs before the II as big pigs, until this one showed up on my TV screen:

Yellow '73 Mach 1's are now the epitome of coolness.
There's a special place in hell for Jerry Bruckheimer for making the worst remake of a car chase movie, ever.

We also have to remember the Boss 351 Mustangs were that bodystyle, a personal fave of mine. Like I said before Big Stangs make great cruisers, they are actually comfortable.

Wish I still had my 67 Fastback, problem with it was it needed some sheet metal that wasn't repoped at the time I had it, no donor available. The Dynacorn 67 (which actually has all the 68 reinforcements & 67 side scoops) inspires dreams with me. Just think a new rust free shell as an unpainted canvas for all my early Stang fantasies to be put on.

this shows your knowledge really well, there NEVER was a 72 with a 427, never was a fastback in 72 either, fastbacks ended in 1968, the sportsroof came along in 69 and ended in 73. my god, you must be a closet chevy homo there now this thread is ended. stick with slicks and leave the cars aloneDoc Pepper wrote:AAGH!
If you are going to try to justify the existence of a mustang, at least pick the right one
1972 full power fastback with the 427 (the one that didn't say "BOSS" or "SHELBY")
Power windows, power door locks, A/C. And still could turn the 1/4 mile faster than any other mustang, well, real mustang.
AAGH! I can't believe you got me to give a mustang credit

I dont givea shit what YOUR definition is, you have no knowledge of the car on topic which YOU created, do some research before you decide to make accusations of a product you dont know shit about, keep drinking your old fart coffee, and leave the beer to me, stick to your old farm truck, your safe thereDoc Pepper wrote:Sportsroof? SPORTSROOF!?
I suppose you drink double lowfat mocha latte grandes with a pinch of cinnamon.
Real men just call it coffee.

I am hurt.
Anybody know where I can get asbestos underwear?
I kinda gotta go with Doc on the Fastback thing here, Ford calls my 05 GT a "coupe"?
I call it a Fastback cause it sure as hell looks like one to me.
I know what you mean though Shawn, Ford sold them as Sportsroofs.
