Toyota Power steering Conversion

Post by dadstruck »

I have just finished rebuilding a 1964 M100 (the Mercury version of the F100) with several upgrades: fuel injected V8, four speed automatic transmission (with a column shift), disc brakes and a Toyota power steering box.
Like many of you I read the articles about the Toyota power steering conversion for the 53 to 60 trucks and that it should be an easy fit into the 60 to 64 models.
Yes it can be done, is it a weekend job no way.
I had to rework the steering column, the steering shaft stops 1" before the floor board, shifter tube stops about 2 1/2" before the floor board just to get the 2 U joints in so that the shafts will align.
The custom pitman arm and new adjustable drag link have given the clearance needed to stop the front tire from rubbing on the pitman arm.

I used a box from a 87 Toyota 4x4 and the pump from a 75 Ford truck. My truck is a 66 4x4 F100 and is not the same as the 61-64 2wd trucks, but just wanted to say that you do not need to use the Toyota pump.

for a 66 f100 4x4 you can get a ps gearbox from a 77-79 bronco or73-79 f150 4x4.bolts right on in place of the manual box.

Steering box

Post by dadstruck »

The boxes that will work are 1979 -1984 Toyota 4X4 pick up.
I am using the power steering pump that was on the 91 F150 engine, the problem with that is the Ford pump produces 1500 psi the Toyota box is only rated for 1000 psi, so I had to reduce the pressure to the pump.

I have more of the steering box it's self and the bracket that I made to mount it, the custom pitman arm and adjustable drag link.
