Cash for clunkers on the verge of reality
Cash for clunkers on the verge of reality
Hot off the presses today. Unreal. Let's use our tax money to basically buy someones car so they can take the money out and buy a new one. Never mind they may be driving the "clunker" because they can't afford new car payments in the first place. Oh, maybe Oprah will give them money. Of my box now. Save the classics!!
In the wake of General Motors filing for bankruptcy and Chrysler emerging from it, the Senate is poised to approve a "cash for clunkers" program as early as Wednesday.
Sens. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Sam Brownback, R-Kan., introduced an amendment Tuesday that would set up a program that allows consumers with older, less fuel efficient vehicles to trade in their "clunker" for a voucher worth up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new car that must get at least 22 miles per gallon or an SUV or pickup that gets at least 18 mpg -- clearly a focus on U.S. manufacturers.
The one-year program is expected to help sell 1 million vehicles, according to Stabenow and Brownback.
The definition of "clunker" is a vehicle that gets 18 mpg or less, and the voucher size varies. Owners who purchase a new passenger car that gets at least 4 mpg higher than their old "clunker" get a $3,500 voucher. If the mileage difference is more than 10 mpg, the consumer gets the full $4,500.
Buyers of small trucks and SUV's fare better. If the new vehicle gets at least 2 mpg more than the "clunker," a $3,500 voucher is issued; for new trucks or SUV's getting more than 2 mpg, the new car owner gets $4,500.
The trickier problem of navigating the House could be solved soon, a senior Senate Democratic leadership aide told FOX News It appeared, according to the source, that House leaders have agreed to accept the Senate bill, if it passes.
The Stabenow-Brownback amendment would be attached to a larger bill that grants the Food and Drug Administration new authority to regulate tobacco products. Final passage of this bill is expected to come likely next week, the aide said.

i think they all got some loose straw between their ears.
their last attempt to pass this did not cover anything pre 90s i think.
even stupid politicians are not going to give everyone a couple $K for their old car/truck.
will look and see if i can find it.
come see what you get when you try to take mine

Everytime I see this I worry. For someone who needs the $ help and has some 80s POS fine. I am concerned they will make it mandatory and come after us.
They come after my old cars/trucks watch the news, they will have to pry the keys form my dead hands -
I WILL take some of them with me.....................................

Sounds like I need to start buying up as many 500$ gas gusslers as I can then sell them for 1500$ to folks what want to get 3500$ for a trade-in!

The Cash for Clunker Bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, has hit a snag. We reported to you that an attempt to pass the bill was being made by attaching it to other legislation that was on a fast tract. That attempt backfired as scrutiny eliminated changes that the bill would be passed using monies from the 787 billion dollar stumilus package.

Looks like another crises in the making.WOW lets sell new cars to people who cant afford them.Didn't we do that with houses before? I love my country but ashamed is not harsh enough of a word for my feelings for this administration. There going to keep on till ONLY the rich people will be driving anyway. We will all be eating roman noodles 3 times a day and riding our bikes to the sweat shop owned by the government. OOPS i got my rant on again...........Maybe we can buy a new truck and kick the POS body off of it and replace it with a slick

The way that I see this is that if a person can't get $2,000 knocked off of a new car and get at least 1,000 to 1,500 dollars on trade in value, they shouldn't be buying a new vehicle anyway. Then they will have to pay sales tax on the full amount which costs them more.
Then these cars are required to go the crusher.
Then the single mom that needs cheap transportation to get work to keep from going on welfare won't be able to find something because they all went to the crusher.
Sounds like a losing proposition for the taxpayers.

all this is is somthing that somone that had nothing ealse better to do dreamed up. why dont they try to stop all of the drugs comming in this country.as far as gas prices and them gripen about not enought oil.sombody needs to get down here and see how many oil wells in louisiana that are capd off. it seems that the easeyest things that could be done, and things that would create more jobs never get done. you would get real mad if you saw how many oil wells there are just in the south east and in texas. and they want us to drive coke cans with wheels. and im not maken this up ive seen it with my own 2 eyes close to my house, they have drilled more than a few wells and just caped them off.and those little cars the goverment wants us to drive. i gess they havent seen a bunch of them that has more or less wiped out in a little fender bender.
