Timing on a 61 F100 with a 223?

Post by rickrob16 »

Hey All,
I have a 61 F100 with the 223 in it. I am trying to time the thing. I have a what looks to be a chalk mark on one part of the Crank pulley. I have an indentation that looks like a Chisel put it there on a different part of the pulley. No graduated marks at all. Can anyone give me some advice? This is all that is keeping her off the road! I do appreciate it!!!!! Y'all take care!

Your balancer should have stamped timing marks I believe. They will likely be hard to see. Unless someone has somehow changed things up on you.
First thing you need to check though is to see if the "ring" on the balancer is loose AT ALL. If it does spin AT ALL your timing will be off and all bets are off-you'll need to replace or repair your damper, before you can properly time it. Good luck

Let me pull out my old Ford Tune-up books and see what I can find- will get back with ya shortly

2013 Ford F150 STX Supercab 5.0 litre

DETERMINATION: The feeling you get right before you try to do something incredibly stupid!

CONFIDENCE: Is the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation!

The timing pointer is on the timing cover-the harmonic balancer has the timing degrees stamped into it- from TDC to 16 in 2 degree increments.
I'm adding the tune up info in case you need it

Point gap-.025, cam dwell 40, spark plug gap .034, timing-4BTDC,
with the unleaded gas we have now + or - 2 degree's if it pings
and valve clearance
Intake-.019 hot
Exhaust .019 hot

Kind of enjoyed getting back into the old books Thanks,
Hope it help

PS almost forgot-but just in case you probably already know - dont forget to disconnect and plug the vacunm advance line beore you time your slick
