"Fender-Welting"

I'm Wanting To Know If Any Generic Fender Welting Work On These Trucks? Also The Rubber Splash Guard That Is Stapled To The Inner-Fender. Has Anyone Made Their Own Using A Piece Of Sheet Rubber, And Something Besides Those PITA Staples. This Look's Pretty Straight Forward But I Know Some Of You Guys Have Done This Before And Come Up With Some Creative Idea's Any Advice Would Be Greatly Appreciated...........................

Dana, although I have ready access to sheet rubber products, I usually just cut an appropriately sized piece out of an old tire sidewall. I use 1/4" -20 stainless fasteners, either carriage bolt or button head. Since I have used button head fasteners for the front end components and tool box on Spot, I will also use button heads when I renew these pieces. Use plenty of anti-seize, especially on the carriage bolts, just in case!
I never have tried the fender welting; where are you considering it's use?

Paul, Isn't There Welting That Goes Between The Top Of The Fender And The Inner Fender? When I Was Prepping The Inner Fender I Was Scraping Rubber Off Along The Top Of It Where It Was Bolted On, I Assumed It Was What Was Left Of Some Kind Of Welting. Are The Button Head Bolts Like The Ones Uncle-Skip Used On His Build, Those Look Really Good...

Yes, I had a misconception of the term. I always thought of welting as having the exposed bead. However, http://www.hotrodstrucks.com/store/cart ... list&c=102 sells a welting that appears flat. Again, with ample access to rubber, I just lay a pressure sensitive strip in place or run a heavy bead of tube sealant. The original stuff seems to be hard to remove, but a quick look through the Autolite parts catalog yielded no welting. It did reveal a bunch of items I did not know existed, however!

When I removed the rubber pieces from the inner fenders that make the seal along the cab, I kept those for a pattern. The pieces look to me to have been made from inner tubes for tires, from the patterns I saw on the used pieces. So, I used an old inner tube and made some. I'm nearly positive about the originals being made from inner tubes, because I checked the originals out closely.

Shadow are you doing a stock restore or a custom ? I am planning to do the same thing Kstone63 did on his truck . He used some foam insulation from home depot or lowes between his inner fenders and his cab . Theres some decent pics in his build thread .

I don't know the name of it,, but my truck which appeared to be original, had a strip caulking between all sheet metal pieces. I.E. inner and outer fenders, fenders to core support, both inner and outer, virtually everything had to be scraped clean as I took it apart.
I used the same strip caulking when I worked at a trailer repair facility back n the 70s. Trailers and motor homes back then used it between sheets of metal,doors,windows and skins.

Okay, This Gives Me Some Ideas. I Have Some Inner-Tube Rubber, The Strip-Caulking Will Require Some Research. It Doesn't Have To Be Perfect, And I Certainly Don't Have A Staple Gun That Will Shoot Through Steel Like This. .............

We used to always have a box of 3M Strip Caulking in the body shops I worked in.....and for us home shop guys, (at least where I grew up), the local Autobody jobbers would sell it by the strip, so you don't have to purchase a whole box.....
