The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

newer i-beams in 65-6 chassis

Post by frankenzuki »

Has anyone put i-beams from a 1992-5 F150 into an earlier chassis? I'm pulling my 65 apart and I think this would be a good swap. Ball joints instead of king pins. Would make alignments much easier. Plus the disc brake swap. Any help?

Thru 79 only. Not sure on the later model ones but would assume, king pin size etc is different. Any measurements? I have a couple loose ones hanging around 65-79 style

I have set of the 65-79 but I'd like to get away from the kingpins. I think you'd be able to bolt in a set from the 92-6 trucks but I'm concerned with wheel track and fender clearance

I thought the track got a lot wider in 1980. I have some 9" rearends from 1980-86 trucks and they are wider than 73-79 rearends and way wider than 57-72's.
If you find that this will work, don't forget that there was a light duty F100 from 1980-83 that used a 4 1/2" bolt pattern like the cars do.
If you continue to buy imports, where will your children work?

Wont work.pre 79 only.80 up were wider and different lengths from pivot point to spring center, would take alot of fab work to make it work. That would be too easy,we cant have that, its got to be difficult to be good for us.

They even cross the opposite direction, the right one is ahead of the left on one type, and behind it on the other. No way they'll swap, you'd have to do a frame stub swap and it's easier to dump the whole Twin Beam setup and go for a real independent front end.

You would have to stub the frame with one from the later style. Good luck lining up your front clip if you do.
If someone wanted to make this swap it would be the best upgrade short of a upper & lower A arm setup. It's just if you are going to go to all that work you may as well go to the upper & lower A arm and ditch the swing arm completely.
