Finally drove the '64!

Post by ScottRod »

Finally drove it to town for a fillup tonight. Lots of minor isssues, one being:
I just bought an aftermarket sending unit from a guy on here. It fits fine and seems to work, but at full (the arm all the way up), my gauge only shows a little over 1/2 a tank. When the gauge shows empty, there's still quite a bit of gas left over.
It's not the length of the arm because I checked it before putting it in and this is what it did with me just holding it and moving it up and down.
Any thoughts?

Bend the arm down? My gut reaction. I'd guess at about a 45 degree angle, though i'd start slow & try until it works.

Sounds like the voltage resistor has too much resistance. But you have to have resistance or it will burn up the gauge.

Yeah, I would almost believe it is a voltage thing. Bending the arm won't matter because like I said, holding it in my hand and lifting the arm all the way up, the gauge only goes up so far.

I'll check my connections. I gotta remove the cluster anyway, none of my lights work, but thats another issue.

Well if all else fails theres always the old yars stick through the filler neck to measure how much gas you got. Thats what the kid I got my truck from was doing before I got it.

your instrument lights and faulty gas gauge might be the same problem. that voltage reducer thing on the back of the instrument cluster may be bad.
