STeering wheel Options

Post by "Whitey Ford" »

What are some options as far s steering wheels for a 62? I dont want a grant or anything liek that but say a 40's ford steering wheel or somehting like that. Is there a way to adapt or install them on our trucks?

This is what I have right now. I do like this but just as a general question in case I came across a cool steering wheel someday.

A 40's Ford wheel won't work because they used a keyed shaft and are a very different shape where they meet the column (they did not have fancy stuff like turn signals!). The reality is the design used on our trucks came out in 61 on the Falcon/Comet/truck and 63 on the Ford car and was used until 1969 in cars (although in 68 the wheels got bigger where they neet the column) and 1977 in trucks. What this means is given the right parts you can use most 61-69 car wheels and any 61-77 light truck wheel as a direct bolt on. There are a few odd exceptions and for a 68/9 car wheel you need a turn signal housing and shift collar from a 68/9 car to make it look right but it will work easily. Hawkrod

I got one from Colorado Customs which fit my needs quite well. Kind of pricey though, about $600.

got ya...ok. My general question is what would fit without cuting or removing stuff. Thanks for the answer. Not sure what kind of steering wheel looked cool in those years though. They were all pretty much big and "dished" werent they? I sorta like how my steeing wheel is flat which gives me more room inside the truck. I didnt change mine, was installed by PO, but he siad he changed it cause he was too big for the oiginal wheel. ahhaha Sorry to say it Paul. ahahha...anyway just wondering...I may look more into it and see what I can do. Thanks
