I gotta ask...is that electrical tape holding your steering wheel together?

Anyway, how about clear lens with letters on the backside designating what the knob is for?

Do not have pics but i have seen marbles, clear and swirles.
But I like both of the previous ideas or a combination chrome knobs with engraved letters.

I like the marbles idea. I need to find a few and try it out myself. It would be a lot cheaper to clean up my old knobs than buy new knobs and/or those white inserts. Some have used billet aluminum knobs, but not a fan of it myself.

My Dad saw 2 of these in Turquoise & White with a clear center and grabbed them at a garage sale for me - just need 7 more now, lol. Doesn't look like anybody stocks them that colour combination though - there is a place with an Ebay store that will make them in any combination you want - $10 each.

I plan on making something similar when I get that far. I have some sheets of red and solid white Plexiglas.
