windshield rubber question

Ok heres my question Iam too both cheap and broke but ok there is a 64 f-100 at the local bone yard it has a windshield with the chrome trim around it and the rubber is in good shape. My windshield is ok but the rubber around it is very poor with a one inch gap where the last owner silaconed it up. Well i was wondering if i could use the rubber on the truck at the bone yard and if it would fit even if it had the chrome trim and my truck is a base model 65? Any advise o so wise f-100 jedi masters ?

It will work but will require some metal grinding to the lip of the metal to account for the thickness of the stainless trim. If you are going to use the trim, I would really check out the rubber because it may be as old as your original is, and may look good but it may be as hard as a rock. You are usually better off buying new rubber and doing the install. You can still go for the trim, but remember to grind down the metal. I can't tell you exactly how much to trim off.

I am not saying that 61 Merc is wrong by any means, but I will say that when I built my N series Slick that it was a base model and I installed the stainless trim from another truck and used a new rubber with the slit in it for the stainless and I didn't have any trouble what so ever and didn't have to grind anything down. When these cab parts were stamped they do not know if they will be used on a Custon Cab or a standard cab. I have found no difference in them.

It should fit fine, but personally, I wouldn't re-use the rubber.

hate to disagree with Michelle but these cabs that where custom cab or standard are different in the windshield lip area , This subject has been touched back many years ago... trucks that are custom cab has that lip removed and with the lip removed makes it easier for the glass man to get the windshield in without beating it to death this lips is not much but when you have many trucks around start looking at the lips...

Wonder if anyone has pics showing the difference? If you do and can post them thanks in advance. Was planning on using the chrome trim off my "parting out" 64 (which is gone) on my 63 Uni. Didn't realize there was a difference.

This is not the first time I was wrong, and I am sure it wont be the last. It must not be a lot more because I didn't have any problem when I installed the windshield on my big truck.

Ok lets see, whats the best way to get the seal and trim out wth out damaging it because my bone yard is a self serve type place? So say that dont work out who sales a good seal because i figure its not gonna be one the local glass man or woman is gonna have? and by the way folks thanks for the help. I love yals help wth yalls help I got my wires all straight shoot i even got brake lights now.

there is a slight difference in them. ive got a uni without the trim and i got a spare cab (custom cab) that im changing roofs on and you can tell the custom cab has a little smaller post for the trim to set in.

does anyone know if theres a problem with using just a regular window without the trim on a cab that had the trim?

I have switched these back and forth and never had any problem.
I have an ex army 65 flareside that I put Customcab trim on in about
1977 and it hasn't shown any problem,same windshield although I
didn't own it from 82 to 88

LETS Go back a few years I did a trivia ? about custom cab trucks and standard cabs on what the difference was ,, A lot of answers till some one came close,,, , what I was told by the person that has been doing glass for many years told us that there was a difference on these trucks on windshield lips and he always ground down the lip,, Well I told him since he was about 80 that he seen one glass toooooo many,, Well after getting home and looking closely at widshield lips he was 100% right especially when I usually have 20 + of these trucks here or whats left... THERE IS A DIFFERENCE in the corners and its hard to get a good picture but its there and look at some trucks and see how the stainless fits or watch sometime a glass man installing a glass, I haved seen them actually beat some of these trucks windshields in when going from standard cab to custom cab and then add this get a price on a glass installed and you will get 2 different rates with s/s or not also look how old these trucks are and over the years they might have had a windshield out or 2 ,, I have only maybe 4 trucks with a original windshield in,, besides the Carlite or FoMoCo in it there is another way to tell

Hmmm..

I had a new windshield put in around 20 years ago on my 65.

I went with the trim around the windshield which my 65 did not have originally.

The guy could not get the trim on the pass. lower corner to fit like the rest of the trim.

It is still sticking out at the moment, I cant remember if the drivers side sticks out.

Maybe this is why...

I am going back to no trim when I replace my cracked windshield and will take pictures.

So, Is it easier to install a plain rubber in a CC truck or install the trim in a regular cab truck?
