Thunderboy's 66 F100 CC project

Post by Thunderboy »

Image

OK, now that I know how to post some pics, I want to intro y'all to my projects. This is my 66 F100 CC longbed. I feel very fortunate to have this truck, as I thought it was sold months before I bought it. It has had only 2 POs since new, and the original owner kept it in pretty good shape. He got quite ill and sold it to a neighbor, a HS kid who put a bunch of stickers in the windows and a big stereo. He must have had some mechanical issue with it, as the original 240 was disassembled when I bought it. My understanding is that he lost interest in the project, and enlisted in the military. His mom and big brother sold it to me almost the way you see it for only $400! I love the color, and I've always wanted a Custom Cab with two-tone paint and all the trim. Cool!
Plans are to make this a driver. I am cleaning the suspension and frame, then installing a 97 EFI 351W with E4OD. More later!

That is a real nice looking starting point. Looks like a pretty good driver just like it is.

I haven't lifted the floor mat yet, Anthony, but it looks very good from underneath. I will get it up on a lift soon, and have a chance to inspect the undercarriage more closely. All I've done so far is replace the bumper and remove the shortblock and 3-speed transmission, and replace the front bumper with a better (not perfect) one.
I've followed your project, and I couldn't do what you've done to repair and replace your panels. I need to buy a MIG and practice, and then I think I need more than a one-car garage so I can get something done!

More pics of the truck here:

I have titles and some info on each photo, FWIW. :)

Very nice is that the original bumper or the replacement? Cause it looks good.

Hi Tom,
It's a takeoff from another very nice F100 CC that I mostly scrapped after I took off some trim and the grille. I still have the dash, fenders and doors, but not much else. I am doing two Slick projects, both 66 long-beds, so I am accumulating a lot of stuff. Problem is, I am seriously lacking room for this! :(

Well, I have made some progress on this lately, but I haven't posted or taken any photos. I will take the camera over and shoot a few things so I can get anyone who cares to read this up to speed.
I just about finished upgrading the brakes to a dual-piston M/C setup. I am keeping drums up front for now, because I am trying to get this thing running. I tend to tear things down too far, and not get them going again.
The 351W is fully assembled, and I am waiting to finish the fuel system and I want to install an adjustable proportioning valve. I did remove the original six-cylinder engine perches, and I installed the small block perches from a mid-seventies truck. Pics soon!

Looks like a GREAT deal! I just had a run in with a fool who wanted that much for just the cab - ragged as heck, rusty, dented, just a mess! He wanted $800 for the "whole truck" which was without engine, trans or rear axle & it didn't even have a bed! All much more rusty than what you got there.

By the way - loving the "air conditioning" - cool!!

OK, I have some pics, from about a week ago. The floor in the cab has some rust, but I'm not going to worry about it for now.

Image

I did split the single piston master cylinder into a dual system. I'm not as good at bending tubing as I'd like, but it will do. Yes, of course I did double-flare the ends! I have since added an adjustable proportioning valve, and will include a pic next time.

Image

Here is a look at the engine, still on a stand, but ready to be installed as soon as I have a few more days working on the fuel system.

More pics in my Photobucket album. There are captions with more details, if your are interested. More pics soon!

Dude, you're killing me. If you're in that deep, spend an hour with a wire wheel in your drill, knock off the surface rust on the floor & under the master cylinder, hit it with POR15 or Rustoleum, and then with whatever color red will get you close enough not to care. (if you don't care about the rust, you can "not care" about the POR/Rustoleum & just leave it at that, too.

I *WISH* my cab was as solid as that!!!!!

Don't let it go to pot.

Good luck with it!

What a day...Stuff doesn't fit!

Post by Thunderboy »

Long story, so I will try to shorten it. Cab floor was covered with POR15 and painted with rattle can red.
Image

I put a new sound deadening mat from NPD on next. That was disappointing, as it tears very easily. It will still be an improvement over the rotted jute backing under my original mat. Image

I trial fitted the headers. These are Hooker Competition headers with 1-5/8 tubes and 2-1/2 collectors. I've had other brands not fit properly because the head flanges don't line up, so I wanted to try it first. OK, it makes for a cool photo, too!
Image

But what ate up most of my time was that I attached the E40D to the engine and tried to install it. Damn, that E4OD is big! I had to cut the trans tunnel floor to install the raised shifter housing cover, so the bellhousing would clear. That wasn't too bad, because I already had an extra cover around, but I tore the sound deadening mat some more when I had to take it out to cut out the trans tunnel for the tranny.
Once I got the engine/trans down into the mounts, I discovered a bigger problem - The LS and RS engine perches aren't in the correct positions! The LS is about 2 inches further back than the RS. This is fixable, but I am not sure which perch is wrong. Here are some pics of each side:

I ran out of time. Had to button it up for today. I am waiting for help with this from all the smart people here on the forum in Truck Talk. Of course, if you have any ideas, please chime in!

Unfortunately, I'm not the smart guy you had hoped to hear from. I had an '88 f150 4x4 with a 351W and a C6. I was toying with installing the engine and tranny in my '64, but cooler heads prevailed and I left the 262 in place. I would like to get another shortbed slick someday and try it. Have you solved your installation problems yet?

That's one beautiful Slick!!! I really looks solid, especially compared to my '61 Uni. Sorry I don't have any advice on the motor, but I'm some one here will have some great ideas.

Have you checked the engine mounts?

I had mine wrong and came up with the same 2" problem.

In your engine picture DS with the header the mount has a 90% tab at the back. Mine has that facing forward.

Just a thought!
