Headers for a 351W with Dakota IFS

Post by jecsd1 »

Just wondering if, among the Dakota folks, anyone knows if there's a bolt on header choice for a 351w. Thanks

I agree 100%

I have mustang shorties on my 302 with aerostar front end. They don't work on Volare clips. The steering box is too big, the header flange hits it.

That's what I'd use as well.

Are you talking about the OEM pieces or aftermarket? I know I could get shortys to fit. I sure would like a long tube though. I guess I'll have to mix and match. Maybe trim and "re-shape" them.

OEM or Aftermarket depends on your engine.
The stock shorties are better than cast manifolds. Aftermarket come in some pretty big primary sizes in unequal and equal length.
As I said all comes down to your engine.
A mild street engine will be fine with the stock ones or street aftermarket, a full out race mill will need the big tubes with equal length to breath right.
If your primaries are too big for the ports the velocity will drop and they won't scavenge properly resulting in lost efficiency.
That help?

You could try long tube 2wd headers for a dent or a bump 2wd, but it looks like from your sig they are in a 64, so that isn't gonna be a stock setup.
They might work, might not depends what you have holding that mill in your 64. I am telling you that shorties work on a SBF in MY 64, so take that for what it's worth.

I tired 2 different headers setups and didn't get them to work. The front two pipes don't have the clearence to run under the rear two pipes as they normally do. I did buy a build it your self kit and then punted. I used stock manifolds which dumped to the rear. The manifolds work just fine and since my truck doesn't stay on red line I see no power differenece. :D

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I would really like to stay away from cast manifolds if possible. I am OK with shorty headers if I had to but would really like some long tubes. I guess I could call IC and see if they have any advise.
