cool car i have permission to buy, here is my dilema

Post by Hoofbeat Racer »

Here's the deal

1964 Galaxie 500 V8 motor unknown, car runs and drives
car is 200 miles away from me sitting in a storage yard for at least 3 years, no key, storage yard owner wants it gone, he can't contact the owner, owner owes him storage fee. I can get it for $1800. I have the VIN and the full name and identification of the storage lot owner. Last title is in the mystery owners' name who he can't locate

Not sure what the laws are in Canada, but I would think that if the vehicle is being sold for mechanic/storage lien then you should be able to get a title. Looks like a great car. My first new car was a 64 Galaxie. Fond memories. Hope you can get it.

There has to be some laws up there for the sale/purchase of an obviously abandoned vehicle. I'd check with whatever you have up there that passes for a Department of Motor Vehicles - I wouldn't give them any specifics though.

Go ahead a buy it as you know you want it. Get a bill of sale from the storage lot owner as he is now the legal owner, and start polishing it.

In Georgia, a year has to pass before you can start the process to claim ownership of a vehicle that has been abandoned on your property. If you sell it before going through that process, it can be considered stolen. Make sure there will be no legal issues.

Special thanks to those that said buy it anyway and hide it. I have been on the phone for the past day with salvage yard operators and the police. There is a process that the seller must go through and he is bypassing it. I could be openning up a can of worms if I do it. I sure want it, however, I have to go back to work in another day, my wife is sick, and there is somewhat of a blizzard going on right now so I really shouldn't be pushing the issue anymore. This sure has been teasing me for the past few days. If it is still around in another week when I am off, I might revisit it. Today at least I will go do a lien check

Mark if he is taking short cuts then I WOULD Check to see if he is not hiding something,,
I just took my Ranger to the DMV to be checked to be sure all Numbers matched and of course it did, which is just a process they go through and the did a search to be sure no leins or stolen vehicle search as well and all passed , then took pictures of the truck, data plate on door and RH Frame rail with the vin number stiil there so it all is good

Good Luck Mark!
If the PO is trying to bypass the process he could be just trying to get the car back and screw over the storage lot. If he was REALLY serious about the car he should either have paid the rent or took it back home if he couldn't afford it. I'd guess he pretty much doesn't have a leg to stand on in the end. It's real simple - he rented storage for it and didn't pay the bills - period. The storage owner has the right to settle the debt and if he has to sell the car to do it then so be it. I of course don't know the laws up there but they should be at least rooted in some sort of common sense & fairness which selling the car at this point would be.
Just seems to make sense to me.

Mark if AB is like ON storage guy has to get(Title) registeration but has to go through proper proceedure.
If current owner comes after you after you change it to you you will be out and have to fight with storage guy to get your cash back
