New Guy From NC

Post by nicks66slick »

Hello from NC.
I have a 66 styleside shortbed that I am restoring with my 15 year old son, Nick. The truck originally was bought new by one of my uncles. He passed away a few years ago and my dad bought the truck for Nick. We have the truck down to the frame and are working on the cab. I have a friend who is a whiz at working with metal. This truck will be a daily driver and we hope to finish it up by the end of summer. It is great to find a site with so much helpful info. We need all the help we can get. I will try to post so before pictures as soon as I can.

Welcome aboard Jim! This is the place to be for your trucks.

You'll find a lot of similarities between your project '66 and the '65 donor truck. Are you going to leave it stock or modify?

Nice things to have on a daily driver that don't affect the stock appearance:
Disc brakes - your '66 will take front discs from a donor Ford '67 through '80.
Engine upgrade - just about everything has been crammed into these trucks and the members here can tell you all about it.
Updated ignition system, pointless distrib, headlight relays...the list goes on.
But this group is the best place to start.

Send pictures and good luck,
Doug

Welcome aboard! :hello:
Sounds like a great project to share with your son. Only one of my boys has taken a partial liking to old trucks, but he get's distracted easily.

Ditto on what they all said welcome.gif
If we can be of any help, we'll sure enough try. Don't forget to keep a Journal of your project so Nick Learns how to do it right.
Besides the record of what y'all did during the restoration process makes the truck worth that much more when you're done.

Jim and Nick.
Welcome to the family.... speaking of which, my cousin John Wilkerson is from the Durham area if you're close by.
But do be sure to check in with him on the NC Ford Truck Owners website.
Also, Rick and Wanda Allen are in your neighborhood at Carolina Classics.
Tell him Skip sent you.

Thanks for the warm welcome :D

To answer some of the questions you have;

The truck came with a 240 engine. I had a local engine builder rebuild it for me. It had over 160K miles on it and would clear the area of all bugs when running. Everything except the block and crank were replaced. I thought about going with a V8, but Nick has a lead foot. (Can't imagine where he got that from 8) ). We hit a junk yard and found a set of spindles and prop valve off a 73 f100, so that the truck will have disc brakes up front. I also bought one of the overdrive transmissions that came off of a 65 f100. It also came with the drive shaft. We hope to add a Classic Auto Air system, and upgrade the distributor with a Pertronix unit. The appearance of the truck will most likely be stock.

I've been buying some parts from Carolina Classics, Dennis Carpenter, and NPD. Had good service from all three. Looks like I will also try LMC and Auto Krafters, also.

I've also been keeping a log of what we've bought and taking pictures of the rebuild. Nick is really into old cars and trucks. He can't wait to go cruising in his truck! :D

Will try to get some pictures posted soon. I've been looking at a lot of the posts. A lot of great info on this site! A lot of my questions have already been answered. Thanks.
