I NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by *1bad66* »

I just started my truck last weekend for the first time. It has a 351w that has a msd ignition, ported heads, edelbrock performer intake cam and carb, fox body 5.0 headers, and a ton of hours in it. I tried to break the cam in about a half hour ago. When I first started it it was backfiring just a little bit but I adjusted the distributor until the timing was 6 degrees before or after top dead center I cant remember which. The backfiring seemed to go away. I ran it up to about 3000 rpms witch is what edelbrock said to do for a half an hour and it sounded great. It was running like that for less than a minute when I noticed the headers were glowing red. I shut it off immediately. This concerned me greatly. I have too much time and money in this engine for it to not work. Could somebody please help me. I greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks

I use to have a holly carb on my truck but I switched to an edelbrock carb and the first day I had it on I was experiencing the same problem. but after the first day it quit doing it and my truck still runs fine. So it should be alright.. but just incase you might want to talk to some other people first.

You are to Lean. If it is backfiring then you need set the timing correctly (not just by ear/feal). If the headers still get realy red then you need to go up in jet size.

It is definitely running lean. The timing may be way too far advanced. Mark the damper at 32 degrees and set the timing at 3000 RPM to this mark. Watch the headers but this should get you good. Any more total advance is not good. Small blocks like 32 -34 total advance.

Thanks for the replies. I set the initial timing at around 12 to 14 degrees. Then I connected the vacuum advance and checked the total timing and it was around 32-36 degrees. I am going to lean it out and if that does no good I guess I need to have it rejetted. Thanks again for the replies.

I would think late distributor timing (or cam timing) or too rich.

Does the engine run strong, what do your plugs look like??
